In the scene, a girl named Cherry Valence has met Poneyboy. Cherry always thought that anyone who is a Greaser is not very smart or is a dropout. When she hears Poneyboy say he got put up a year in grade school, she say,"What's a nice, smart kid like you running around with trash like that for?", is brought to the attention that not all Greasers are not smart. Poneyboy proves that what most people believe to be true, is a stereotype.
     Continued on page 23, Cherry says, "Man, your brother is one doll. I might have guessed you were brothers- you look alike." This takes Poneyboy by surprise and responds through thought," I grinned with pride- I don't think I look one bit like Soda, but it's not every day I hear Socs telling me they think my brother is a doll." This means that the two groups, the Socs and the Greasers, don't usaully get along and that the Socs would likely never compliment a Greaser.
