MAUS Book 2 Chapter 4 questions

Look at the title page for the chapter. What do you think the words and images foreshadow? I believe that the words and images foreshadow them being free. The chapter is titled "Saved" and the mice are in prison uniforms.

List 5 events from chapter 4. 1. Vladek expresses himself to Artie on why he saved so much. He then mentions that he wants Artie and his wife to stay with them but Artie refuses. 2. The German guards allow the Jews they had to leave on a train. They said there would be Americans on the other side waiting of them. However, after they get off the train, they are no Americans but Germans. 3. Shivek and Vladek stayed in an abandoned house while the war was going on. They hid on the top side of the barn, under the hay. There they ate chicken and drank milk. 4. The Americans find Vladek and Shivek in the house. They will use that house as their base camp. They allow Vladek and Shivek to stay, as long as they make their beds and keep clean. 5. Vladek and Shivek were on the Americans good side, despite the old woman accusing them of clothes robbery. They didn't punish Vladek and Shivek for taking them, instead they just said that it would be right for them to return them. At this point, these two Jews were safe because they had protection from the Americans.

What animal is used to represent the Americans? Why? (go deeper than dogs kill cats, there are other reasons too). Dogs are used to represent the Americans. It was the best choice to pick for them because they were at war with the Nazis. It was only realistic to have dogs vs cats. This represents the Americans defeating the Germans in the war. It gives a better insight of the results of the Americans and the Holocaust.

What is symbolic about the scattering of the photographs on pgs. 115-116? (pdf pages 110-111). The importance of the scattering in these pages is to be more descriptive and have more detailed images. Such as having the pictures of Vladek's family, and then showing him sitting down with the pictures scattered around the floor. It shows his family member, as he talks about them and explains what they went through.

MAUS Book 2 Chapter 5 questions

Look at the title page for the chapter. What do you think the words and images foreshadow? I believe this has to do with Artie and Francoise. He is able to now spend time with her and live their best life. Artie has finally settled his father's problem and they have peace and time to enjoy their life.

List 5 events from chapter 5. 1. Vladek and Mala get back together. 2. Vladek informs his son of how Shivek and him were sent to a camp, where they would be given their identity papers. Which is where he finds out where Anja is at because he meets some friends there that inform him of her. 3. Anja goes to a gypsy where she is informed that her son Richieu is dead. However, her husband (Vladek) is alive but very ill. She is told that she will receive a sign from him soon. 4. Vladek sends Anja a letter, with a picture of himself. The image of Vladek is not in animal form but in an actual human form. Vladek and Anja meet once again. After that they lived happily ever after. 5. Vladek doesn't want to talk to Artie anymore because he is tired. Vladek calls Artie, Richieu before he fall asleep. Then the next picture is the gravestone of Artie's parents with his name on the top.

In this chapter, Vladek can’t remember things from the day before but can recall events from the Holocaust. What does this tell us about his experience? This lets us know of the scar that is left inside Vladek. It is impossible to forget a stage of life that meant do or die. He is sick and forgetting what happens in the past days, but he will not forget all about the war because that's a life long scar.

Why does Artie use the photograph of Vladek at the end of the book? Why not put the picture at the beginning? I believe that he added the picture at the to allow the reader to create an image in his mind as he reads the book. It is a slow build up that he wants the reader to have. It isn't something that he wants to give the reader right out of the start.

What does Spiegelman draw on his parents gravestone and why (do not speak of the names and dates – they are a given)?Besides giving their dates of death, he gives them a squared panel on their names, with a candle in between them. Then he has star shaped symbol on the top of their grave. Spiegelmam's name is on a rectangular panel right above their name. I believe that has to do with the most important people in Artie's life.

Which is the best way to have a captive audience for a book? Art Spiegelman's book, Maus is a graphic novel that came out in 1980. A book about a Jew (Vladek) that had to overcome every obstacle in order to make it out of the Holocaust alive. The taste of the author and the diction to create this book is why it is one of the top books today. A graphic novel that contain such sensitive information, converted into a comic book that makes everything more understand and less touching than the other holocaust books. A book that everyone should read because it's worth it. A book that could be read multiple times, and it leaves a bitter sweet taste on the reader. This book is a solid 9 out of 10 because it has helped me understand the Holocaust and how hard life was for the people back in the 1900's.
