The first Star Wars film was released in 1977. At that time, the technologies that we can find today did not exist. That's why; like many other films of the time, especially horror films, it was necessary to use dummies, framing and even models to achieve a 'convincing' effect.

Many probably didn't know that the fantastic sets presented in the first films of the saga were models made of cardboard, fond, fishing line and so on. In the same school model style, the filmmakers had to create planets, ships, deserts and other elements in order to develop the plot in the desired context. Of course, these models did not necessarily have to be life-size, which is all the more interesting since, given the above premise, the filmmakers applied two techniques.

One of them was: filming the set (the model) without the characters and then filming the protagonists in front of a green screen for special effects. After doing this, which meant double the work, the post-producers had to figure out how to paste both shots into one shot using editing and post-production software.

The use of extra elements such as ships, dolls, planets or whatever could help to create an even more convincing atmosphere and depth by simply placing them in the foreground. While both of these techniques demonstrate hard work and ingenuity, the results were quite incredible, but for the time. Nowadays it is easier to notice some errors in the staging of the sets and we can even notice that many of the elements on stage are dolls or have been made from architectural materials.
