A Sound of Home

As an international student, I've definitely had my share of "wobbles" dealing with homesickness and the occasional cultural shock. It can sometimes feel overwhelming to be so far away from everything familiar.

My solution is to take a quick trip home without ever leaving my room. I brought my rubab (a traditional stringed Pakistani instrument) with me.

Whenever I feel that familiar sense of anxiety or homesickness creeping in, I put my books down, take a break, and play my rubab. The sounds and the feeling of the instrument in my hands instantly transport me back to my home and family. It’s a simple, powerful way to center myself, feel grounded, and recharge before diving back into university life.

If you're an international student struggling with the transition, my tip is to find your own 'sound of home' whether it's a piece of music, a special dish, or an item that connects you to your roots. Taking a small, intentional break like this can make a huge difference!

The area is beautiful in beautiful in Autumn and a nice nature walk space so close to campus. Another great park in Wollaton, which has deer in it. Walking in the city centre is also lovely in the late Autumn with a hot drink in hand when the city lights turn on for Christmas.

It’s a great way to take a break from constant noise and screens, as well as get your body gently moving and enjoying some fresh air.

It’s completely normal to feel overwhelmed or down sometimes (university is intense!), but managing stress doesn’t require huge changes. Give yourself the benefit of the doubt! This feeling is completely normal but it won’t last forever. Allowing yourself to enjoy the little things whilst being on your own and getting to know yourself in a different setting is the key to being able to branch out and make connections.

I have a list in my notes app of everything I love about life. Whenever I’m feeling like the days keep moving on without me, I open up the pinned note, and I will schedule into my week all the little wonders that help me feel like I can breathe again. I’ll go on a walk with my camera and headphones and capture the world through the lens. I’ll sit in a coffee shop, buy an overpriced cappuccino and a new book and loose myself in it between sips. I’ll wake early, before the sun and my housemates, and write until the sky brightens. I’ll FaceTime my family, friends from home, my cat; have long procrastinating chats with friends. Too often I find myself hung up on the great conflicts of life so much that everything seems pointless, but every now and again I have to fit in these trivial, necessary things that bring me peace, to remind myself why it’s all worth it.

Finding balance in the wobbles

There are moments when everything feels a bit too much, when the world moves too fast and I am just trying to keep up. My own wobble came quietly at first, the sort of unease that builds when you are far from home, surrounded by new faces and expectations. I remember feeling like I should be doing better, handling things more easily, and that made it even harder to admit I was struggling.

What helped was slowing down and being honest with myself. I started going for small walks around campus, even when I did not feel like it, just to clear my head. I would listen to music, focus on my breathing, and remind myself that I was not alone, that most of us have days where things feel unsteady. Talking to friends helped too, not necessarily for advice, but for that quiet understanding that comes from being listened to.

I also began writing down little things I was grateful for, like a kind word from someone, a good cup of tea, or sunlight through my window. It did not fix everything overnight, but it gave me perspective. Slowly, I stopped seeing my wobbles as failures and started to see them as signs that I am human, learning and growing.

Over time, I found a few things that made a real difference. Keeping a routine helped me feel more grounded, even if it was something small like making my bed or planning my day. Getting enough sleep and eating properly made more of a difference than I expected. I tried to spend less time scrolling on my phone when I felt low, and more time doing something simple but positive like reading, cooking, or going outside.

I also started doing breathing exercises when I felt anxious, which helped calm my thoughts and bring me back to the moment. Sometimes, I would buy myself a small sweet treat or reward for getting through the day, just as a reminder that little wins matter. Another thing that lifted my mood was writing positive quotes or kind messages on post-it notes and sticking them on my mirror. Seeing those words each morning while getting ready for uni gave me a quiet boost and reminded me to keep going.

If you are having one of those days, be gentle with yourself. Take things one step at a time, reach out to someone, rest when you need to, and do something kind for yourself. Remember that everyone wobbles now and then, and that it is part of growing and finding balance. Wobbles do not last forever, and when they pass, you often realise you have become stronger for having faced them.

I often suffer with imposter syndrome and fear I will be discovered as a fraud. What I am finding helpful is to write down or save positive feedback and compliments I get from others and when I have acheived a goal etc. Its really easy to forget how well you are doing and how far you've come when you are feeling wobbly. I also have some go to treats when I have made it through a difficult task - my fav songs, a nice coffee and cake or watching re runs of my fav sitcoms 🤩
