A memory of Ralph's is described. A vivid description of his house, family, and surrounding places in his life is talked about to contrast the intensity of the hunt that is taking place with the boys.
"Everything was all right; everything was good-humored and friendly."(112)
This quote uses imagery to describe a scene that is a complete contrast to the current situation of the book, to give the reader insight on how they boys have lived prior to their time on the island.
"Vividly they came before him;" (112)
This quote sticks out to me because it shows that Ralph is envisioning his home because his desire to return there grows, and the importance of getting home is a high priority to him.

Simon tells Ralph that he will "get back to where he came from" (111). This line is also an example of repetition as it is said three more times throughout the page.

"The brute obtuseness of the ocean, the miles of division, one was clamped down, one was helpless, one was condemned one was -" (111). This quote shows how hopeless the situation looks for the boys and shows the true scope of how far they are from civilization.

Ralph agreed to go hunting with Jack and the hunters, Ralph was able to wound a boar but it ran off while Jack got wounded by the boars tusks. There was a meeting held by Jack and they ended up hurting Robert as if he was he pig. "That's a wound" said Simon. "and you ought to suck it. Like Berengaria". This is an allusion because Berengaria, the wife of Richard the 1st of England, had to suck the poison out of her husbands wound to save him

While the boys are hunting together Ralph steps back for a minute to remember his life back at home. "Mummy had still been with them and Daddy had come home every day. Wild ponies came to the stone wall at the bottom of the garden, and it had snowed" (112). His flashback shows that Ralph longs to be back home in a peaceful and happy environment.

"Everything was all right; everything as good-humored and friendly" (112). This moment is significant because it gives insight into Ralph's motives for being the leader of the boys. It also speaks to the innocence the children once had.

1. The boys are investigating the "beast" hanging in the tree at the top of the mountain, and they are quietly scared of what they might find.
2. "the darkness and desperate enterprise gave the night a kind of dentist's chair unreality" (122). This is a metaphor that explains the fear that the boys have on the mountain, the same way the dentist may have been their worst fear before their arrival to the island.
3. "the inner voice of reason, and other voices too, made themselves heard" (122). Ralph is struggling inside himself over what the best thing to do is, and this quote is interesting because it really ties to Freud's theory, as he is hearing different voices of reason calling inside of him.

Ralph thinks to tell Piggy about their location because he thinks they will not get back to their campsite before dark, leaving Piggy alone to babysit the littluns with their nightmares.

b.) A symbol of a darker mood, cast over the novel can be described by Golding, "Vividly [Ralph] imagined Piggy by himself, huddled in a shelter that was silent except for the sounds of nightmare" (117).

c.) A quote that stood out to me was, "Jack cleared his throat and spoke in a queer, tight voice. 'We mustn't let anything happen to Piggy, must we?' " (117). This stood out to me because it demonstrates Jack's real personality and how he does not take Piggy seriously in the slightest.

d.) ...well respected and can't provide the same protection as the hunters.

"When you went to bed there was a bowl of cornflakes with sugar and cream. And the books--they stood on the shelf by the bed, leaning together with always two or three laid flat on top because he had not bothered to put them back properly" (112). This quote uses the literary element of imagery to promote a sense of peace and calm upon the reader. It's significance is to illustrate the ease and tranquility of Ralph's life back at home in contrast to the situation he is currently in on the island as he hunts for the "beast".

3. "Mummy had still been with them and Daddy had come home everyday" (112). This quote stands out to me because it leaves me in curiosity. With the way this sentence is phrased, it makes me wonder. How long ago was this memory? Does he think about this often when it gets extra difficult on the island?

Simon noticing this, sat next to him and repeatedly told Ralph with a sense of confidence that " ' I just think you'll get back all right. ' " (111). Through Simon, Golding is using the literacy element of foreshadow with the purpose of making the readers hopeful that the boys will survive the island and it's adversities.

When "Simon shook his head violently till the coarse black hair flew backwards and forwards across his face" (111) it brought a sense of significant importance to audience of what next Simon was going to say. That Simon so thoroughly disagreed with Ralph calling him crazy or insane when heavily insisting that Ralph was going to make it off the island alive and back home. This is significant as it further proves that Simon is foreshadowing the Ralph's future.

Ralph wants someone to tell Piggy they will be back after dark and Simon volunteers, upsetting Jack.
"Jack cleared his throat and spoke in a queer, tight voice. This quote seems significant as the tone contributes to the feeling that it is very dangerous in the forest at night and something bad could happen to Simon.

A.) Simon and Ralph are having an insightful conversation with each other when Simon makes a statement that brings a level of comfort to Ralph.
B.) Simon begins, " 'No, I'm not. 'I just think you'll get back alright'. For a moment nothing more was said And then they suddenly smiled at each other." What Simon states here can be an example of foreshadowing. He is speaking to the future and essentially saying that he believes that Ralph will make it off the island & be rescued. This statement can also allude to Simon possibly thinking that he might not make it off as he chooses to use the word you instead of we.
C.) "Simon nodded as he spoke. He was kneeling on one knee, looking down from a higher rock which he held with both hands, his other leg stretched down to Ralph's level." This shows that Simon is truly trying to connect with Ralph as earlier they realize that they are nowhere near the society they used to know. He wants to make sure he gets his point across to Ralph.

They all got carried away by holding Robert down and hurting/scaring him while pretending he was the pig.
" 'Kill him! (114)
This could be foreshadowing of a later hunt for one of the boys by the rest of the group.
"Ralph too was fighting to get near, to get a handful of that brown, vulnerable flesh. the desire to squeeze and hurt was over-mastering." (114-115)
this quote sticks out to me because it shows that Ralph lost some of his rationality in this ritual because he was suddenly overtaken by this urge to hurt Robert during all the excitement.

The group of hunters argue over a boar, whether Ralph hit it, and Robert gets roughed up by the group. The beast is also mentioned, but it is confirmed to be a boar. " 'I hit him! The spear stuck in'... 'I hit him,' said Ralph again... 'I hit him all right.'... 'I hit him.'... 'I hit him,' Ralph said indignantly. 'I hit him with my spear,' " (113-114). Ralph seems to repeat that he hit the boar over and over again. This is an example of repetition, and it's likely used to show that Ralph is trying to prove something, since he is also vying for chief. Something that stood out to me was their roughhousing of Robert, which looked like they might actually do it. "They got his arms and legs. Ralph, carried away by a sudden thick excitement, grabbed Eric's spear and jabbed at Robert with it. 'Kill him! Kill him' " (114). The fact that they were doing this could likely be foreshadowing for the murder of a character later on in the book.

" Before them, something like a great ape was sitting asleep with its head between its knees. Then the wind roared in the forest, there was confusion in the darkness and the creature lifted its head, holding toward them the ruin of a face. " (123 ) Here Golding uses symbolism, he uses the description of the beast to represent fear. He uses words like great ape and roars. He does this to show how the boy's mind iminge this beast and how much the fear consumes them. Jack notices as they get closer "For the first time since he had first known Jack, Ralph could feel him hesitate.(123) his instinct to be strong-willed and be the biggest man goes away as fear creeps in. " He would like to have a bath, a proper wallow with soap. .. and decided that a toothbrush would come in handy too" (109). Here we see Golding using imagery to make the reader invasion the appliances that Ralph would like to have in his bathroom. As Ralph is examining the other boys and sees how dirty they are he remembers that's just there reality reality. "He discovered with a little fall of the heart that these were the conditions he took as normal now and he did not mind" (110). This is important to me because after all Ralph was desperately trying to get out of the island he's come to terms to if this is going to be his life he has to get used to it.

Summary: The boys had gone on a pig run chasing down a pig and Robert had gotten wounded. The other boys had made a ring around Robert while pretending as if he was a pig.

"Ralf, carried away by a sudden thick excitement grabbed Eric's spear and jabbed at Robbert with it"(114). This quote is significant because it shows how Ralf is led by his "Id" and acts carelessly without putting much thought into whether it is the right thing or even humane to do. It also gives an insight into the brutal and savage actions the boys make because of isolation from society.
The "chant rose ritually, as at the last moment of a dance or a hunt"(114). This could foreshadow their desire to hunt again later in the chapters.
