At dawn Hitler launched a full planned attack on Poland. This attack was a complete surprise to the polish as german forces entered their Northern, Southern and Western borders. The polish army was stationed too close to the border which coincidentally helped the German charge. The Battle of Westerplatte, the Battle of Danzig Bay as well as the Battle of Mława were all on this day. Another name for the engagement was the Battle of the Border which also took place during the following days.

Battle of Lwów was a land and air battle. It was an attempt from the polish to stop the germans from taking the city of Lwów. The Polish originally assumed that the city was too far back to need defenses but the german Blitzkrieg showed them otherwise. On September 22 the polish surrendered. They were ordered to join the soviet forces. However the USSR broke the terms and started killing polish officers this became known as the Katyn Massacre.
