We all have a strong vision and knowledge of technology. But interestingly enough, we all were really excited that there are a lot of tools that are free, because we all already know the reality in our classrooms.
#investmoreineducation#teachersneedPD#TeachersNeedCommunityofLearners

While many teachers see incorporating technology in the classroom as coming with barriers, such as being unreliable, a time consuming learning process, not compatible for their room or school, or easy to malfunction, there are major benefits to going over those barriers and using the technology anyways. Teachers can always research to find the most reliable technology for them, take the time to learn how to use it correctly and efficiently, and tag team with other colleagues to make sure you are all up to date and proficient in some of the new technologies. Technology is extremely beneficial in the classroom and faculty and administration should be inspired to research and evaluate in order to help give their students the opportunity to learn in the newest and most interesting ways.
- Sam Wolff

Technology has huge benefits when used in the classroom, but why are so many teachers not using it? This article explains that there are 3 major barriers: 1) there is a lack of support by the institution, 2) there is a lack of money, 3) there is a lack of time. Some suggestions to getting over these barriers is evaluating technologies before purchasing and making sure they are reliable. Also, each class should have the same technology so everyone can help each other with problems after the specific training. Institutions also have to realize how important these technologies are and have these systems maintained. Technology should be used in the classroom but certain measures need to be taken before installing these technologies. #supporttechnology #evaluatetechnolgoy
-Sam Kiss

Teachers are hesitant to add technology to the classroom because of barriers or their lack of adaptation. I think it is important for teachers to have PDs related to the technology or to have meetings where safe spaces are made for teachers to collaborate on what is working with technology. I think this would help students feel more in tune with technology and teachers as well. This would help lower the barriers that are present among educators and their relationship with technology. Teachers should take the approach of exploring technology just like students, which would also help to reduce the barriers associated with incorporating technology in the classroom. #explorelikeastudent #immersivelearning
-Amber Lutman

Technology is the driving force of today's society and is worth the effort to implement into the classroom. I think that introducing teachers to the different technology that is out there, whether this is through a PD or through a staff meeting would be helpful and encouraging for teachers who do and are struggling with technology. When everyone is learning together and collaborating, it helps make the experience a lot more efficient and worth the time placed into it. #Technologyisworthit
- Haley Pearson

Many teachers view technology as a headache, difficult, complicated, and time consuming. It is worth it to note that often times the barriers lie in the initial "adoption" of technology. After the technology is learned and established by both the teacher and the students, many difficulties, headaches, and complications are avoided by using this technology and time is saved by avoiding such things. #ProficiencyWithTechnology

-Jonah Zimmerman

My teachers and classrooms have not adapted technologies because of the lack of time and resources. Learning a new technology can take a lot of time and energy in order to have a strong understanding. Teachers must have a strong understanding to be able to incorporate effectively. I also think that teachers do not have the financial resources or tech support in order for teachers to incorporate the quality technology that they wish too. It is important for schools to allow teachers designated time to learn about new technologies they can implement and research new technologies that are available. School districts should examine how successful the technologies and programs they are money on now are or if there would be programs better worth their resources. It is important to support teachers with the necessary time required to learn new technologies and the financial resources in order to support technology integration into the curriculum. #TeachersforTechnology
~ Tess Marshall

Two big barriers teachers face to using technology is difficulty using the technology and not enough time to learn how to use the technology. The lack of time means teachers would be learning to use this technology on their own time. Teachers and people in general often get frustrated when they don't know how to work/use something right away. If a teacher has to spend time to successfully understand technology, they may pass on using it all together. If their classroom is successful now, some may think why bother changing it? #TimeforTechnology #UsingTechintheClassroom #TechisTough

Carly Broman

One suggestion that I believe will work best to overcome this barrier is to encourage the purchase of highly reliable technologies while also improving system checks and maintaining up to date technologies.

It is so important for institutions to address the barriers that faculty face to implementing new technology within their classrooms. These barriers consist of reliability, the time it takes to learnt new technologies and the concern that technology may not actually be critical for learning. These barriers stem from many different things. First off, it was found that technology fails about three times per semester which is far too much. It is said that "zero breakdowns" is the backbone to successfully using online technologies in the classroom. Secondly, if the technology is difficult to use or learn, teachers may be less adamant about implementing it. Lastly, the question of how beneficial and critical is technology really when it comes to learning? Therefore, is it worth taking the time to learn it and become proficient in it? In order to address these barriers the following is necessary: more PD days to help train teachers in these online programs, encourage faculty to assess and evaluate the impact of these programs on student learning, purchase highly reliable technologies and not just the cheapest ones and establish clear guidelines and responsibilities for checking and maintaining classroom technologies to avoid unreliability or breakdowns. #breakinglearningbarriers #morePDdays #sayyestotechnology

-Andrea Lussier

I was not surprised to learn about the results found from the research done in “Barriers to Adopting Technology.” Many of the barriers they found are ones that I think every teacher faces. The study found that the number one barrier was equipment error or malfunction, followed by the amount of time to learn new technology. If we want our educators to have technology in the classrooms, we need to have the support for them. Educators are educators, they are not “technology masters.” The study also talked about the amount of time it took to adopt new technology, and by the time they are adopting it, new technology is coming out. Schools need to be efficient in their decisions to integrate technology, and if they are going to integrate new technology they need to give educators the time to learn to use it so they can use it efficiently.
#supportoureducators #integratewisely

-Evan Fedewa

Basically, if we want to incorporate technology in the classroom (world or nationwide) we need to begin with the barriers and break these barriers down. The main barriers that stand in the way of adopting technology today are: reliability, lack of time to learn, uncertainty that technology matters *(which it DOES)* and last of all, lack of support. We must combat these four aspects before ever being able to actually incorporate technology into our everyday lesson plans. A lot of teachers see this more of a distraction than educational, but that is because they have not tried these game based theories on their own. They view them as too much work and there is too little time in a day for them to be properly implemented. Once one person picks up these tools though and begins to share their success stories, I truly believe that this technology integration will spread like wild fire. It is just "too new" in some minds and if it is "too new" there is not enough research to back it up and therefore will not be taken seriously. Well, I hate to break it to you but there is a ton of research out there now that proves the importance and success of implementing and adopting technology into the classroom, but those that don't believe in it will not read the research because they simply don't want to believe it. This barrier article was not surprising but I have always wondered what the exact barriers were and why people refused to implement technology - and now I know! #breakingdownbarriers #voteyestotech #adoptclassroomtechnology #nomoreoldschool

Barriers to Adopting Technology: When teachers have a great idea for a lesson plan and try to find something similar to use online, it can get somewhat frustrating. For me, the most frustrating part of using technology is it not being reliable. Having a video or online activity buffering can waste a significant amount of time. Also having programs that worked an hour before not work or shut down mid-lesson plan makes teachers hesitant to use technology. Some recommendations from Butler and Sellborn include purchasing highly reliable technology, establishing clear lines of responsibility for checking and maintaining quality control of classroom technology and maintaining supplies as well as being open to new approaches and updates. Being mindful of using these tips can help teachers use the best reliable technology.

Barriers that teachers come across with technology is the amount of malfunctions that occur with equipment errors. Two problems with this would be 1) Most educators are not trained on how to efficiently use this technology and do not know how to use it in the classroom to benefit students and 2) There needs to be reliable technology if we are expected to use this as teachers. There is constant technology coming out as stated in the article and it was completely true. Every time I got the “updated” IPhone, they were already making the next version. We do not have the time to be constantly keeping up with these updates in our classrooms on top of all other responsibilities. #integrateeffectively #cannotkeepupwithnewupdates #teachersandtechnology

-Rebecca Powers

Barriers that teachers face when adopting technology are lack of funding, lack of support, and lack of time to learn about new technology. Technology is evolving at an exponential rate, and it is often hard to keep up with without proper funding, support, or time. To overcome these barriers we must change our attitude about technology, and see it as exciting and limitless. We need to be vocal about the many ways technology can enhance student learning, and show all the possibilities. If we get excited about technology, and express our interest, we are more likely to get support and funding. As for the time factor, we must be dedicated to understanding the importance of integrating technology, and find ways to make it happen!
#letsdothis #bepositive #technologymakeslearningmeaningful #breakthebarrier #adopttechnology
-Brittney Burrows

While technology has been proven to be an effective tool within the classroom, research has shown that it is often times not used to its utmost ability. Digging in to the reasons why have exposed several walls that stand in the way of why technology adaptation within the classroom is slow, or even sometimes non-existent. Three reasons in particular can summarize the most common barriers that exist between technology and teachers: lack of instructional support, lack of financial support, and lack of time to learn new technologies. The combination of these three walls results in classrooms where technology is not fully adopted. Based on my own personal experience within my placement, I have seen "lack of time to learn new technologies" directly effect students. At the beginning of this year, each second grade student in my class was awarded a brand new iPad, loaded with apps and programs, all of which would engage and promote the learning of a variety of content area issues. One such program is titled eSparks. The district spent $10,000+ on this program that offered differentiated instruction to each student as they embarked on one of two quests: either a math quest or a reading quest. The integration of this program was BRAND new for teachers and students, and therefore resulted in confusing mornings of chaos and questions, as we all just "learned-as-we-went." Aside from an optional three hour seminar during the summer for staff, there was no time set aside for staff to learn how to promote this new technology. Here we are two months into the school year and students and staff finally seem to have everything under control. However, my CT and I are worried we aren't even using this program to its utmost potential. I know this program is effective and amazing, but the frustration that has built around this new form of technology has made both myself and my CT wonder if it is worth it. Thankfully, pushing through this wall has allowed students really to grow, but the adoption process has taken much longer than either of us (my CT and I) would really like. To say the least, technology is worth it and we are seeing this now, it just takes time. #bepatient #trytryagain #technologyvrsteacher #adopttechnology

-Abby Niemiec-

Some things that hinder educators from adopting technologies are unreliability (including software malfunction or incompatibility), inability to quickly learn how to use the technology, wondering if the technology would really enhance learning, and inadequate campus support for the technology. Butler and Sellbom suggest purchasing reliable technology, training staff to use new technology, allow staff to assess and evaluate new technologies to see whether or not it's worth it, and streamline a response system to improve support for the technology. I would add to this list of suggestions that staff should be asked to seek out and suggest technologies they discover that they think would be useful for student learning. I would also think it'd be wise to have meetings with staff prior to instituting new technologies to review them, provide rationale, train staff how to use it, set it up ahead of time for them, and explain how to handle common errors or how to contact technical support staff if necessary. #onlyworthitifyoumakeitmeaningful #keepanopenmind #trytech #supportyourstaff

-Mackenzie Frederick

Some of these barriers include resources (time, money, etc.), support, and reliability. I feel that some of theses barriers cannot be avoided like money and reliability of technology. But time could be addressed by providing a professional development day to learn about some of the technologies that could be used in the classroom. Support could also be addressed by showing the progress that the technology could provide however someone would have to be willing/able to collect such data. #makethechange #supporteducation
- Karley Kirkendall

There are many barriers that keep technology from showing its true potential in the classroom, and many of them are intertwined with each other, making this a very complicated issue. Reliability is a large issue in regards to integrating technology into the classroom- the article I chose suggested buying the best technology, not the cheapest. However, the district may not be able to afford the best edition of the technology in question. Not being able to integrate it to the best of the teachers' abilities is another issue, which can be solved in investing more PD time into technology and really integrating it into the classroom. #bringtechnologytotheclassroom #takethetimefortech
-Alix Hawk

There are several barriers that keep technology out of the classroom in today's schools. One huge barrier is the reliability of technology, which causes teachers not to want to use it in the classroom. One way to avoid this issue is buying highly reliable technologies so that you're less likely to have issues and need many repairs for malfunctions. Many teachers also struggle with learning how to use new technologies. This biggest way to avoid this issue is by offering detailed training programs for teachers. They can't teach through technology if they don't understand how to do it! Institutional support is also another huge issue with technology in schools. By restructuring institutional support programs, universities can effectively provide the support that schools need.
#timetoteachtechnology #teachtech #techsupport
-Karly Post
