I have frequently supported the staff at MAED Brunei to deliver children's first aid and CPR awareness courses . These courses have been delivered to students at Brunei Universities, nurseries, healthcare settings, DART drivers, and charitable organisations. MAED is run by a wonderful entrepreneur Ira who together with her team also connects with Brunei Beach Bunch to educate and train as many Bruneians as they can in CPR and the use of AED for free.
Supporting these courses helps me secure my cultural awareness and improve my sensitivity to the needs of the local Bruneian communities.

In 2022 I proposed the idea of having a student led library team. Now I work with 2 children from each class in years 3 to 7 who have been taught in detail how to maintain and organise our school library. They volunteer 10 minutes each week to sort returns, check for damaged books and ensure books are returned correctly. The library monitors then teach and handover their skills to the next monitors. This allows the library to remain usable by all classes and teaches the student's to have responsibility and ownership over their resources.

Eco warriors

Through our ECA a small group of children have now become our eco warrior ambassadors. They have chosen to maintain a working vegetable garden in school and to monitor the recycling program. The children have advertised the recycling initiative, presented their ideas in assembly and made a kit list request for the PTA to purchase. Practicing a variety of practical and creative skills has increased the participants self esteem and sense of responsibility to a wider world.

Wellness week

A diverse group of activities were organised for the whole school focusing on daily themes. Be active, (a whole school aerobics session, completing stair climbs to equal the height of Mt Kinabalu) Keep learning (learning new skill such as Japanese, Tae kwon do and sewing) Give (supporting a local plant seller and collecting funds for charity Pusat Ehsan), Take notice (a wellness walk) and connect (sharing positive messages and planting new plants in school).

School recycling

After initial recycling systems were rejected I connected with a Brunei recycling depot through Green Brunei. ISB Seria campus has now started collected aluminum cans and paper and cardboard to deliver to the depot, and raise funds in the process. Our eco warriors who are supporting this enterprise presented their experiences confidently in a school assembly to encourage our school community to take part and follow the 3 R's !

Science Day

A full day of varied activities was organised to showcase different areas of science. From biology (exploring a cow heart), astronomy (creating a sun dial using our shadows), chemistry (exploring and testing PH levels), physics (floating and sinking), physics (spectrum of light). These activities were led by our year 6 students who presented the tasks and asked thoughtful questions to extend the children's learning.

Using most current evidence based practice and training completed recently through ERIC and the Children's Bowel and Bladder organisation UK I was proud to support a number of pupils and their families to overcome their child's bed wetting at night. Parents reported that the self esteem and confidence of these children significantly increased as a result.

In partnership with Brunei Beach Bunch children and staff from ISB Seria took part in a 24hour CPR challenge. Children throughout the school learnt the basics of delivering effective chest compressions and how to call for help in an emergency. Watching the children grow in independence during this event was extremely rewarding.

I have initiated this workshop style group to support and extend children's learning and progress in maths. Starting in term 3 some children identified by their teachers will meet to take part in activities focusing on extending existing skills and using problem solving and reasoning techniques to encourage Seria students to become independent learners. Initial plans include Breakout edu boxes, Nrich practical activities, skype a scientist (focused on using maths in science) and mathletics as well as in the future meeting with children from other International schools.

Children from ISB Seria joined children from Panaga School to present their concerns of the high volume of plastic whipper snappers they retrieved in and around campus to BSP leaders from IFM. The children spoke assertively about their concerns for local wildlife and offered reasonable solutions to help decrease the threat to the environment. Opportunities like these encourage our students to become confident and responsible individuals.

Dental check ups

Children from Year 3 visited Panaga Health clinic where Dr. Padma kindly examined every child for free. Dental health and hygiene recommendations were then forwarded to parents. Children were also taught how to clean their teeth effectively and learnt more about their diet can affect their oral health and hygiene.

FOBISIA student participation events

I have recently facilitated our school to join and succeed in a number of FOBISIA led student events.
Firstly I facilitated for our students from year 4 to 7 to participate in an engaging and unique maths code breaking challenge, allowing them to explore the wider concept of problem solving linked to many real life examples. Also greatly enjoyed by the teachers!
In November our students year 5 and above will join a 'perspective' themed Art competition. In January I will lead our school's participation in a short story competition with an AI focus.
All of these events have allowed a greater number of our student body to explore new interests and connections with other FOBISIA schools around the globe. Widening their previous preconceptions of school competitions historically maintaining a purely sports focus.

Diwali celebrations

In November 2023 I led and co ordinated, with the help of some very generous student's parents, a whole school Diwali celebration. Dances, plays and fashion shows took place and of course some delicious Indian food was enjoyed by all. These whole school events are a wonderful opportunity for us to engage with parents and our wider international community and encourage our students to learn about diversity through exploring cultures that differ from their own.

Although the tips about fostering a culture of improvement by commiting to small changes was interesting, within the classroom it was the idea of removing obstacles that I found most useful. When I was experiencing continuous low level disruption with late comers, I took a different approach to reduce the interruptions ;by changing the students bag storage to outside the classroom children were encouraged to come in and be ready to join the lesson. enabling success!
