The ideology on slavery in the South was a result of many things such as the Nat Turner uprising in 1831 which determined southern whites to make slavery more secure. In response to the pressures of writings and slave revolts southerners produced a new intellectual defense on slavery. John C. Calhoun stated that Southerners should stop thinking of slavery as a necessary evil and defend it as a positive good. Southerners argued it was good for the slaves because they had better condition then industrial workers in the North. They also argued that the two races could live together in peace. They also thought it was good because the southern economy was based on slavery.
