“Re-read the description of the Friar in the “General Prologue”. What are his character traits, his motives, his methods, etc.?”

From the “General Prologue”, it is clear Friar is a happy man who lives a life that is well put together. He is known to be very social and known by the people who surround him. He is well respected for the things he does for people. However, he does live his life begging. He makes sure that what he does for people always benefits him afterwards.

Response to “Chaucer’s Friar: A Portrait of Immorality”

Jim Knapp, Jr. starts off his argument describing Friar as a “snob, corrupted by greed”. I do agree with this statement. He is known to trick and manipulate people for money. Knapp states how it is known that there is “no one as knowledge in fair language and sociability” as he is. Friar has made himself out to be a man worth honor, but it never adds up in the end. The corrupt Friar has been shown to take full avantage of just about everything. I think this argument is very valid. We have seen the ways Friar has acted out, and we have determined his intentions. He is only there for himself in the end. All in all, Knapp’s statement, “Chaucer’s "General Prologue" is remarkable in that it allows us to see not only what characters may claim to represent, but also how they really are inside. Chaucer’s depiction of the Friar, who should be a man of upstanding piety and virtue, makes it readily apparent that he is quite the opposite” is absolutely nothing but the truth.

Friar reveals the summoners sinful ways.

In "The Friars Tale", the Friar tells a "jest about a summoner". He tells the tale to the people, including all the rights and wrongs that the summoner has done. He explains the crime, manipulation, and blindsiding done. The summoner gets information on the people from his town, and turns it around to use it to benefit from it. The summoner was exposed of being a thief and a sinner himself. The Friar left it all out on the table and showed the people who the summoner was behind his mask.
