How do you feel about the course?

-I think it's very interesting , and i have made many new friends.

What do you hope to learn?

-About how to use English to communication with each other .

What do you need to improve before the end of the course, and how will you do that?

-I need to more memorize more vocabulary and grammar , in addition , do a lot of speaking practice is very important.

I choose a white paper ,and tried to imitate teach video. I was curious to see if i make a paper airplane by completely imitating this video what result i had. As shown in the picture (left), my plane looked wide ,i like it. I wanted to experiment with a test flight, result showed the plane fly very straight and distance is very short.

After class, I wanted to find out if i make a paper airplane better than this .Therefor I made the second(middle) and third (right). It wasn’t as easy as it looked, because I thought possible a lot, such as different shape, fly distance and papers weight. Have a good result in final, the third plane had speed fast, had a beautiful shape, and the most important thing is it fly distance so long and straight! I’m very pleased with the results because I made over and over again adjust. I enjoyed the process of learning how to something make be better because this is process of reflection.

What I learned is that don’t be afraid of failure, brave attempt. At the same time deeply reflection is quite a lot important. When I do this kind of work in future, especially design, I’m going to reflect and adjust my work.

Personally, I believe I have different identities in society. For example, I’m a graphic design student, a daughter in my family, a girl with black hair, and an ENFJ in MBTI types...Whatever the context, identity always comes back to a few main questions: who am i ? where do i come from ? where am i going ?

During the research project, I found the most interesting part was looking for aim theories or references to support my ideas. For example, when i research the question ’What is identity‘, I believed that personal subjectivity play a central role. In order to support my viewpoint, I found scholars in relevant fields, such as Maslow(self-actualization). At the same time , i still feel this part is difficult . I can't explain Maslow's main viewpoint very well, and how to apply it to my design and life.

In the eyes of others, my identity can easily be simplified into a sign or label. I always tend to unconsciously act in ways that fit this label. For example, three months ago, I took an MBTI test and the result showed that I am an 'I' type (introverted). Since then, I have become shyer and less confident than before. Through this experience, I began to realize ：during self-actualization of identity, how to deal with being labeled by others, and how to become your true self rather than the person others expect you to be, is an important topic to explore.

I chose IKEA. This is a Swedish home design brand known for affordable, functional products. IKEA aims to empower people on a deeper, emotional level. Choosing furniture is essentially about making decisions for one’s home, and IKEA strives to make every customer feel like the main character and decision-maker in their own living space.

I think this brand has a clear understanding of both its products and its target audience, and its business philosophy aligns well with its overall identity.

That’s why I like this brand, and during holidays, I enjoy going to IKEA with my friends—whether to shop or just enjoy the atmosphere.

2.I agree with her viewpoint, i learned about we all have different identity in different space. Maybe others will give you a sign,but we must keep ourself, follow your heart and your thoughts, don't live completely according to the sign.

• I think it’s busy, fulfilling, but happy period of time. I feel complete different education methods compared with China, I have more encouragement and confidence, became braver, and feel happy things that learn knowledge. I live with encouragement！💕

How do you feel about the course?

• Last week, I learned about the exam rules for 15wks, including academic integrity, proper use of AI, and the meaning of identity.

• Most importantly, we had our first group work! Doing the group work helped me better understand what “identity” means, and showed me how important it is for friends to exchange ideas, communicate, work together, and listen to each other.

What do you hope to learn?

• During group discussions, I had trouble speaking and listening. I don’t know enough words, my grammar is not very good, and I think slowly. These things made hard for me to say what I want, and I didn’t fully understand my classmates and teachers.

• I realized use a new language needs more patience and good preparation to talk about with others. From this, I think that using simple sentences and words can show my idea clearly.

What do you need to improve before the end of the course, and how will you do that?

• I will learn some design words every day. I will listen to more English to improve my listening.

• Finally, I want to join the discussion more easily next time.

3. I will choose to observe the rules, and practice the abilities of independent thinking and independent research of information.

In that group, my English was better than others, so I tried to explain the discussion task to my classmates and spoke my views on this topic. To my surprise, I found that my speaking level has improved. Even if I used very simple words or make grammar mistakes, I can still express what I want to say clearly. I felt confident because I successfully helped my friends. I felt satisfied and I will study hard with the aim for help my friends.

During the class, I keep learning new words and phrases, whether from teacher's PPT or communication with my classmates. However, there are some reasons that make it more difficult for me to express myself. Such as I get very nervous during the teacher's question session (because my reading speed is too slow, I can't find answers that teacher want, and I'm afraid I won't do well enough).

This session is too serious. There is another reason when my friends can't understand what I'm saying, I feel nervous and I think it's because I haven't expressed myself well enough. However, I'm still confident. I'm not afraid of making mistakes. Even I speaking Chinese, I sometimes make mistakes...

Next time, I will try to prepare some words and phrases that help express my viewpoint. And try to give up the idea of "doing everything perfectly".💕

In the first, designer's culture identity have deeply affect for their design work. Their families, countries and histories will all become the inspirations for designers' creations. Like Ingvar Kamprad, due to he lived long time in Swedish, his brand creative concept accord with "Democratic design (Swedish identity)" : simple, fairness, multifunctional.

Secondly, personal identity is good for creative special style and visual language. Different countries, races, jobs and so on together make up "personal identity". In today's society, black designers and artists always discussion topic that Racial discrimination and cultural integration.

Finally, artist and designer express "social identity", for example LGBTQ group, woman's rights, against war...... There are help special group or others pay attention to social topic.

In conclusion, I think that identity can influence an artist or designer's creative, affecting their expression methods, materials, and creative forms, it's all very important in work.

I think my photos worked well because I took different pictures a lot. At the same time, I visited Qingdao coffee festival. During the festival, I felt very active and happy. I could see many cute puppies and try different kinds of coffee. The atmosphere was very relaxing. Many families were flying kites. There were also lots of tourists, so it was a bit noisy. I could feel the fresh sea breeze.... I did my best to record everything I feel.

Another place that sounded interesting was Carol's university. Her shared some pictures about this place. It looks very beautiful and clean. School is a very important place for us. It's not only where we study and live, but also where we make friends!

My favorite piece of feedback from Heloise, she and I discussed about famous beers in Qingdao, we both like drink beer haha~ And the most useful comment from Clara, she asked about "how feel live different between big city and small one" , she had deeply thinking.

As far as I am concerned, grammar is the most difficult part in English writing, and it is also hard to use some prepositions correctly (such as with, as, for, to).

But for the most time, thinking about the content of the writing that is easily.

What helped you get started?

Some simple and familiar topics for me, like IKEA that a brand is interested for me. Or the teacher gives examples and I do sentence imitation.

What made writing more challenging?

Professional topics can increase the difficulty of writing. How to write long and difficult sentences, how to choose words, and how to express my ideas.

Did you feel confident sharing your writing?

Yes, I think the finally goal in writing is to convey my viewpoints. Although I can't sure that the grammar in my sentences is all correct.

Billy is not a loud or flashy product but quietly supports people’s everyday lives, I hope my design work can be quietly powerful—offering comfort, support, and fairness to those who need it. That’s also why I chose to study design: I want to become a “people’s artist,” someone who uses creativity to serve others, not just myself.

This made me realize that "democratic design" is like my ideal self: not a loud or flashy product but quietly supporting people's everyday lives.

This kind of adaptability reflects a deeper part of my personality: I see myself as someone with many sides.

Project overview

Ingvar Kamprad, the founder of IKEA, was born in Sweden, a country with scarce resources. As a result, making full use of resources, working together and emphasizing the practicality of items have become part of the brand identity of IKEA.

Identity connection

Under the democratic design concept of IKEA, the ideas of "usable by all", "empathy" and "pragmatism" really touched me.

For instance, my parents' education have made me realize that one should make use of the available resources and solve problems with creativity and logic instead of just daydreaming. Besides, during my growth, I have experienced being "ignored", so I am more likely to sympathize with and pay attention to the feelings of ordinary people, and am more willing to help others (within my capacity).

Its importance of making me ponder how the cultural environment change our way of life and influences more people.

Description:

Since last week, we have been finding research and giving presentation practices on the "identity" project. We have made many attempts at giving speeches, such as 2-minute speeches. And today, we have created a 5-minute presentation on project, and we made posters to help us with our presentation.

Feelings:

The presentation is getting longer and longer, I need the more content and I have to ensure the logic of the speech is correct. Before the speech, I spent a lot of time practicing. I feel very nervous but also very excited.

Evaluation:

At the beginning of this course, I was very afraid of giving presentation. Because I think my English is not fluent. But now,  I’m very pleased with the results because if I am given sufficient time, I can do my best to deliver a good presentation. Even though sometimes I still forget what I want to say. But I know I did better than before.

Analysis:

Reflecting on my experience of giving presentation, I think the reason why I felt nervous was that I didn't prepare the logic of my presentation thoroughly. I'm afraid I might forget the content or make mistakes when speaking.

Conclusion:

This is normal. A little bit of nervousness can make your brain think more. Hang on to this.

Action plan:

In future, I will try to increase the use of body language and eye contact in my presentation. I want the atmosphere of my presentation to be very relaxed and friendly, just like a conversation between friends.
