Joaquin here! Being enrolled at this course Philippine pop culture, really broadened my mind about things in the pop culture era in our country. Technology now really is like another part of us, it’s like the extension of who we are. This course helped me to further my understanding on. things like the emergence of the Filipino drag queens, who are very progressive and known in today’s time. 2^nd is the tattoos here in the Philippines, specially designs that came from the different cultures in the different regions in the PH. 3^rd is the Filipino films, Filipino movies right now are more diverse and more versatile with those qualities it paved way for them to recognized in the international stage. 4^th is my further understanding of how Filipino vloggers are now dominating the internet world, where there are various names that can distinguish who they are whether they will be a vlogger or a so-called “influencer”. Lastly the 5^th one is quite a funny one, but it was a fun time where “Grilled balut” was a trending phase that all the Filipinos was riding the trend like a wave.

If I were to talk about one topic about the 5 mentioned above, it would be the emergence of the Filipino Drag queens in the industry. To what I can recall it all started when going out was now lenient although the pandemic was still there, but the night life was now going back to life. Specific bars before always cater homegrown drag queens to perform every night, and that was the 1^st movement for them to be known and recognize in the industry. August 17, 2022, the first episode of Drag race Philippines aired, a famous reality TV series about drag queens was now being featured in the mainstream media. It was a hot topic but since people nowadays are more accepting and curious, they somewhat indulged with what the show is all about.

Philippine Drag queens, are now given more limelight not only in the mainstream media but also in the local scenes. The LGBT community are ever so proud now that their voices are heard and topics that are not talked about frequently are now given the light. A progressive community is not a stroll in the park, it must be a cohesive collaboration from both parties, being heard and understood is the 1^st way to achieve this. The rise of drag queens in the Philippines is a great step for the LGBT community to be heard an understood in the way that people may comprehend on a simpler manner.

Agenda setting will be one of the theories that we have discussed that can anchor my Philippine pop culture topic. Agenda setting theory is all about how the media influence the public minds and shapes their opinions. Gatekeeping is also one of the factors that this theory encapsulates but on a narrower level it gives the public a more thought on what media they would want to consume. With the drag queens in the Philippines, they were given a higher pedestal when the airing of the Drag Race Philippines was shown in the mainstream media. In line with that people became more curious about what this show is all about and what a drag queen really does and act. At the end of the day it all really leads down to being heard and being equal in living in this society.
