The photographer is Jacob Riis, a documentary photographer who wrote a book called "How the other half lives". This book describes the living conditions of immigrants mainly from Europe to the United States. It deconstructs the cliché of the "American dream". This picture shows a gang of Irish men. Immigrants lived in dangerous, unhealthy neighbourhoods, where violence reigned and they were isolated from the rest of the population. The Irish sought a better quality of life when they arrived in the United States, but they found themselves living in tiny apartments and paying excessive rent.

It is really dirty. The people are sleeping on journal and don’t even a duvet.     On this picture we can see on the bottom eight man laid on the floor and on a table. In the middle we can see a little wood -burning on its left we observed wood made of broken chairs and table. Around the stove there is some food. With this photo we see easily the poverty of the immigrants. There are gathered in a little room without many food. Its shows the really bad position of the Irish immigrants.
