Jacob A.Riis, How the Other Half Lives (1890) "In the Home of an Italian Rag-Picker, Jersey Street" : A ragpicker sits with her swaddled baby. She and her family lived in a windowless room on Jersey Street in what is now an alleyway in Soho. The Italian Mother and Child, an 1889 Photograph by Jacob Riis was published in THE WAY THE OTHER HALF LIVES: STUDIES AMONG THE TENANTS (It documents the miserable living conditions of New York's slums and shantytowns in the 1880s by Jacob Riis).

This photo was taken on the streets of New York during the Great Famine in Ireland that led the Irish people to immigrate, the vast majority to North America. The photographer is Jacob Riis, a documentary photographer who wrote a book called "How the other half lives". This book describes the living conditions of immigrants mainly from Europe to the United States. It deconstructs the cliché of the "American dream". This picture shows a gang of Irish men. Immigrants lived in dangerous, unhealthy neighbourhoods, where violence reigned and they were isolated from the rest of the population. The Irish sought a better quality of life when they arrived in the United States, but they found themselves living in tiny apartments and paying excessive rent.
Victoire and Anaëlle

On this photo we can see two boats overloaded by irish immigrants who maybe arrived in a city for a better life or leave it if they are refused. We can see behind many modern habitations and a huge church (maybe a cathedral). The caption said that this is the city of queenstown, located in New Zealand which is the country with the less irish immigrants between the seven location of irish immigration.

This picture represents how bad the peoples lives on bad conditions and were treated badly. We can see that they are sleeping on the ground, they are 9 in a room, some peoples are sleeping on tables. They lived in a room that was used for everything ( kitchen, sleeping, heat with the hood ). It wasn’t even cleaned. We can guess that they didn’t even had a bathroom to clean themselves. It is really dirty. The people are sleeping on journal and don’t even a duvet. We can supposed that they weren’t eating a lot of food
