Canto-pop/HK-pop - Brief History

I have to admit, I don't know much history or informations related to Canto-pop; to me, canto-pop is the music that my dad used to wake me up in the morning, or the music that you can listen to on the street and today, there's not many canto-pop that I remember, but sometimes, walking on the people crowded, messy street in HK, a song from radios along the street that I can remember the rhythm and hum to it, makes me happy. And I am actually a "stubborn" person; if I find one that I really like, I can listen to it for years and not listening to other songs.

Canto-pop (Cantonese pop) are usually music or songs created in Hong Kong, written in Standard Chinese and sang in Cantonese. It's style were influenced by Jazz, Rock and Roll, Disco, Electronic and so much others that forms its amazement. Canto-pop were used to be performed with Traditional Chinese Instruments but were given up really soon, replaced with bands and piano, synthesiser, drum sets and guitars. It was really popular and well-known all over East and South Asia in the 1900s and till now.

To be honest, as a young new generation, there are a lot of popular and great Canto-pop in the 1970s to 90s, when Canto-pop were at its Golden Age, that I don't really know about.

Canto-pop reached its Golden age at the time when technology and modern industry develops. More and more resources and new culture are being brought and sent in and from Hong Kong to all over the world. More and more talented singers, producers and record companies works together to produce good music works in harmony in the 1980s. In the 1990s are the era of the Four Heavenly Kings; since young, I know and everyone knows the Four Heavenly Kings. They are 張學友(Jacky Cheung), 劉德華(Andy Lau), 黎明(Leon Lai)(and his Chinese name actually means "dawn"), 郭富城(Aaron Kwok). They have some really famous songs that I will put at the back of this "brief" history introducing. There are also some famous and my personal favourite singers and songs, bands that I will talk about along with their song videos. The Canto-pop in these few years are not as popular as before, but there are still a lot of magnificent songs produced.

Discussion on Authenticity of Canto-pop

As I said before, Canto-pop is a very multi-genres and a lot of different elements included type of music. There are more and more different elements included in the past years as new generations can learn more about different cultures, but there are no doubt that Canto-pop must be sang in Cantonese (but a little other language lyrics in a Canto-pop are acceptable), but other than this, I can't really say what elements can make a song not considered Canto-pop; in the 1900s, there are a lot of songs from Japanese being re-written in lyrics to become Canto-pop in HK, and most of them were really successful and popular since than.

But of course, there are some people, especially from an older generation that experienced the greatest era of Canto-pop wouldn't approve the new "styles" that Canto-pop being created and produced by the younger generation. To me, I can understand as the qualities and resources of Canto-pop are limited as many other new music genres attracted talented singers and producers, and Canto-pop are hard to be produce as Cantonese is a sensitive and complicated language, if not used well, the words being sang would be a real disaster; the new Canto-pop produced might as not be as great as the Golden era.

Overall, Canto-pop is a really interesting and free-styled genre that all you need to produce one is the passion, the music knowledge, and of course Cantonese. Although Canto-pop in these years might not be as good as the 1900s, there are still a lot of singers, bands and producers that are working hard to continue this great symbol of Hong Kong and a part of Hong Kong people's best memories.

Jazz is one of the best music genres to my ears and heart. It have always been part of my daily life and the most chosen genre of music in different family events. It was usually being played in Christmas, but now in Canada, my mum would play it every night in our yoga and reading time before going to bed.

Jazz is a music genre that originated African American community in Orleans, USA, and included a lot of different types of music, e.g. blues, ragtime, etc.

Jazz usually uses trumpets, saxophone, piano, double bass, the drums and a lot others to perform, and it changes due to different kinds of style or theme.

In my research of Jazz, there are a lot of famous people that pops up, and here are some that I will introduce:
- Louis Armstrong (1901-1971) He was a great trumpeter and vocalist that some of his famous Jazz music are: What a wonderful world, Cheek to cheek, etc.
-Oscar Peterson (1925-2007)(I believe we learnt about him in music lesson)

Surprisingly, from my research on Jazz, it showed that Hong Kong was one of the earliest places that have been influenced by Jazz during the time being ruled by British. In the 1980s, Jazz was used in a lot of classical HK movies too, and it is getting more popular in the whole world.

To me, Jazz brings me a lot of different feelings when I hear different Jazz music, and it is always the top one music genre that can give me the most memorable experiences of feeling alive than other music I hear.

I don't know much about Jazz, so I just want to put some famous music and some of my personal favourites about it to express the greatness it brings to me.

In Jazz, there are a lot of elements included in it that makes it wonderful and "evolve" through time, but there are some points that make Jazz unique, original.

Firstly, its elements. At the beginning of my brief history/ introduction of Jazz, it wrote that Jazz was originated from an African American society, so its origin and concepts are certainly about tradition indigenous music of African, but not about European. So this is an important point to note about.

Improvisation - a really amazing and brave thing when I first learnt about it. Me as an instrument player too, I practise a lot everyday, and I can still feel how hard and time needed when playing, learning, and even understanding music. But the people that could play Jazz and make an improvisations means that they have to know every single notes on the piano, while making an invisible sheet of music only using your knowledge and creativity, and play immediately. I really look up to this special thing of Jazz.

Its approach of rhythm is also important. Jazz musician would "swing" notes, which would change the length of notes, making some shorter and some longer, making the music more lively, more changes in feelings and with more possibilities.

P.S. And here is City Lights, it is so relaxing but not the "going to fall asleep" kind of relaxing. It relaxes your brain and makes you just want to tap your fingers, leg along with its beats.
