The number one precaution to consider when expecting a child is having proper prenatal care. As stated in the textbook, "Those who don't get proper prenatal care run the risk that such complications won't be detected or won't be dealt with soon enough." Both parents should aid in monitoring and acknowledging the baby's health in its early stages. After speaking with my parents, I hear that when I was the womb, they would often go see a doctor to constantly check up on my health and prevent any potential health problems.

Risk Factors

During a pregnancy, a mother has to be very careful about what risks they take. It says in the book that "Many factors affect the development of a fetus into a healthy child, some which are beyond your control and others that are within your control." Such risk factors include: smoking, alcohol, caffeine, drugs and herbal remedies, nutrition, exercise, prenatal care, multiple sex partners, exposure to chemicals, and many others. My mom told me that when she was pregnant with me, she was advised by her doctor to do some exercising. She then occasionally went on long walks to do so. According to the book, "Moderate exercise is helpful as it improves the mother’s mental state and can increase oxygen flow to the fetus."

Teenage pregnancy not only takes its toll on the baby and teen, but on society as well. The textbook states that "Pregnant teenagers do not have a life built up to support a baby, so they often need the help of those around them. " State and/or federal agencies often have to assist those who've become pregnant at a young age. They often lack a proper education due to time spent taking care of their child. This lack of education lessens their chance of obtaining a job that could potentially contribute to society. Recently, a girl in my grade gave birth to a child at just 17-years-old. She dropped out of school and has devoted all her time to child care. Society could have just lost a potential contributor.
