Authentic Language Use: TBLL emphasizes authentic language use by engaging students in real-life tasks that reflect situations they might encounter in the target language.

Assessment Based on Task Outcome: Assessing students' performance based on how well they complete tasks rather than solely on their accuracy in language forms encourages fluency development and boosts confidence in using the target language.

Teacher's Role: The teacher in TBLL shifts from being an authority figure focused on correcting errors to becoming a facilitator who designs tasks aligned with learners' interests and needs, fostering an environment where students enjoy using the language.

Phases in TBLL: Dividing the learning process into pre-task, task performance, and post-task phases forms a task cycle. Each phase involves different roles for the teacher:

Pre-task phase: The teacher introduces the task, provides necessary language support or input, and prepares students for the upcoming task.

Task performance: Students engage in the task, applying the language skills they've learned to complete it.

Post-task phase: The teacher facilitates reflection, discussion, and feedback on the task, allowing students to analyze their performance, learn from the experience, and potentially address any language issues that arose.

This structured approach helps students not only in language acquisition but also in developing problem-solving skills, critical thinking, and the ability to communicate effectively in real-world situations.

Weaknesses and limitations

While Task-Based Language Learning (TBLL) has numerous strengths, it also presents some potential weaknesses:

Time-Intensive: Designing and implementing tasks tailored to learners' needs and interests can be time-consuming for teachers. It might also require more time for students to complete tasks compared to traditional teaching methods.

Complexity of Task Design: Creating tasks that are both authentic and suitable for language learning while aligning with various proficiency levels and interests of diverse learners can be challenging.

Difficulty in Assessment: Assessing tasks for language learning outcomes can be subjective. Evaluating language proficiency solely based on task completion might not adequately measure learners' language skills.

Lack of Focus on Form: TBLL prioritizes communication, potentially leading to less emphasis on explicit grammar or language form instruction. Some learners might need more structured guidance in language rules.

Challenges in Error Correction: Allowing natural error correction within communication might lead to repeated errors going unnoticed, potentially reinforcing incorrect language usage.

Classroom Management: In tasks requiring group work, managing student dynamics, ensuring equal participation, and preventing dominant individuals from overshadowing quieter students can be challenging.

Resource Intensive: Effective implementation of TBLL may require access to various resources, including materials for task creation, technological tools, and authentic materials to support tasks.

Variability in Task Impact: The impact of tasks on language learning might vary among learners. Some may thrive in task-based settings, while others might struggle with the open-ended nature of tasks.

Understanding these weaknesses can help educators address potential challenges and adapt TBLL approaches to suit the needs of their students more effectively. Incorporating a balance between task-based activities and explicit language instruction could help mitigate some of these limitations.

Integrating Task-Based Language Learning (TBLL) with other teaching methods can enhance the learning experience by combining various approaches to suit different aspects of language acquisition. Here’s how TBLL may be blended with other methods:

Communicative Language Teaching (CLT): techers can merge TBLL with CLT, emphasizing real communication through tasks while incorporating elements like role-plays, discussions, and information-gap activities to enhance speaking and listening skills.

Grammar-Translation Method: By the use of the elements of TBLL to complement grammar-translation by applying learned grammar in context through tasks. For instance, after learning a grammar point, students may be engaged in tasks that require its application in real-life scenarios.

Audio-Lingual Method: Combining TBLL with audio-lingual activities can be done by integrating repetitive drills or pattern practice into tasks. For example, after practicing language patterns, students can engage in a task that requires using those patterns naturally in conversation.

Content-Based Instruction (CBI): Educators can integrate TBLL within CBI by designing tasks that involve language learning through content areas. For instance, a task could involve researching and presenting on a topic relevant to the content being studied.

Task-Based Learning with Technology: Blending TBLL with technology-enhanced language learning methods may be done by utilizing online resources, language apps, or virtual collaboration tools to facilitate and enhance task performance.

Total Physical Response (TPR): It is advisable to the teachders to incorporate TPR with TBLL by using physical actions or gestures in task-based activities, especially with beginner learners. For example, pairing language commands with actions in role-plays.

Flipped Classroom Approach: Educators should use TBLL to create tasks that students can engage with outside the classroom (pre-task phase), and then use class time for discussions, group work, and feedback (task performance and post-task phases).

Suggestopedia: Some elements of suggestion and relaxation techniques should be infused within TBLL tasks to create a comfortable environment for language use, enhancing learners' confidence and reducing anxiety.

By combining TBLL with various methodologies, teachers can create a more comprehensive and adaptable teaching approach that caters to different learning styles, promotes communication, and facilitates a holistic language learning experience.
