A free-trade area is the region encompassing a trade bloc whose member countries have signed a free-trade agreement (FTA). Such agreements involve cooperation between at least two countries:
a) to reduce trade barriers – import quotas and tariffs
b) to increase trade of goods and services with each other.

The reduction of trade barriers and the creation of a more stable and transparent trading and investment environment make it easier and cheaper for SG companies to export their products and services to trading partner markets.
<sup>
--> If people are also free to move between the countries, in addition to a free-trade agreement, it would also be considered an open border. It can be considered the second stage of economic integration.

Bilateral FTAs:
China, India, Japan, Korea, New Zealand, Peru, Australia, Costa Rica, USA

US - Singapore FTA (USSFTA)

The USSFTA Intellectual Property (IP) Chapter is a key milestone in Singapore's economic growth strategy. Singapore's economic progress depends on fostering and protecting knowledge creation. IP has become an important trade issue amongst countries as can be seen by the prominence it plays in international platforms such as the World Trade Organization. Hence it is not surprising that the IP issues played a key role in the negotiations. The provisions are part of ongoing efforts to ensure Singapore has the advanced regulatory infrastructure to support our growing knowledge and digital economy.

The IP Chapter provisions cover patents, copyright, trade marks, and even protection of plant varieties. It will strengthen IP protection that is vital for the growth of some of Singapore's specialty industries like biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, and info-comms.

Regional FTAs:
China japan india australia
