They torture Winston to show him power is expressed most fully in forcing others to suffer, but more importantly to remake him into the party. The things that O'Brien does to him is to show Winston that he is the victim and the government has complete control over him and that trust is subjective. O'Brien uses his deepest fears, rats, to betray Julia. Once that was done he no longer had something to live for but Big Brother. Winston got brainwashed by the torture and he has no other option but to give himself to big brother. "How many fingers Winston?"
He tortured Winston till he believed four fingers was five. This would be effective on a real life setting. Pain ans fear can make people believe and do whatever you want.

Think back to what you know about torture and people’s effects that have gone through it based on your personal knowledge. Why do you think they use the specific kinds they do on Winston? What are they ? Do you think they are effective, or would be effective in a real life setting? Why or Why not? Do you think after being released Winston will be able to bounce back from the brainwashing? Explain your reasoning with a quote from this chapter.

They are trying to wear down Winston by making him physically and mentally exhausted. They shock him until he immediately gives them the answer which then leads him to start believing in it. They also beat him up and then inject him with something just to wake up and get beat up all over again. Yes I think it's very efficient because their government is completely controlled by the inner party which means it works. For the sake of the story I hope that he is able to fight back because it would make things interesting instead of him just being brainwashed and losing. " 2+2=5 "

Torture is used on people commonly to mainly either get answers out of them or brainwash them into something like a cult -like the society in this book-. O'Brien and the others are using these certain types of torture on Winston to brainwash him, attempting, perhaps forcing him into loving Big Brother and become yet another oblivious mind in a crowd of mindless zombies. You commonly see torture in thriller/action movies, ways of torture used to get answers. The victim almost always snaps and leaks the information they are torturing for. Although this may work in the movies, the is successful in real life scenarios as well. But in Winston's case, he is being punished into becoming someone (something) he is not. Using torture to get the victim into pretending they like Big Brother or any other organizations seems odd. It seems like the total opposite thing to do, but Big Brother believes this is the easiest way to brainwash them. Winston has rebelled against Big Brother almost his entire life. I believe, over time, he will convert back to rebelling, but even openly hating Big Brother.

When Winston is tortured it is showing him that others have more power then he really thinks and that power is shown and given in different ways. They show that being tortured is showing that others are useless and that mean things are always happening. O'Brien keeps putting things in Winston's head and telling him that the government is always watching him and making Winston paranoid. The government is always watching and controlling what the others are doing. O'Brien is trying to get everyone worked up including Julia. O'Brien also tells Winston that he has a certain amount of fingers when he really has the right amount he is trying to mess with Winston's mind.

People are tortured usually to get information out of them, or it could be for almost any other reason. It can really mess with a person and get inside their head. Usually, it can take a while to get the information out of the person but eventually the person gives up when they can't take it anymore. When they are torturing Winston, it is proving that other people have more power than he does and that Winston is basically useless along with everyone else. They shock Winston until he gives the answer they wanted, brainwashing him Winston to make him believe anything that was said. He was tortured until he believed that four fingers were five. I think that after he is released it might take a while for him to bounce back from the brain washing. He is strong and was one of the people who could retain their memories from the past, so I think that he will be back to 'normal' eventually.

They using torture as a method to mentally, physically, and emotionally abuse him to wear down his brain and get him to do what they want. They want answers and thoughts from him and this is the best strategy for them. This method is very proactive because they are obviously getting what they want out of him. It is the most efficient way. They shock him until he gives them exactly what they want. I believe that after he is freed from these harsh conditions that he will take a while to recover from these vile actions. He will eventually get there though and become well again.

When you beet, torture, and cause someone to suffer it's generally a good way to get information out of them. I might take a while but usually the person will give in eventually. Being able to get information out of someone proves that you have control, and big brother is showing Winston that they have control when they shock him for information. Winston is being brainwashed. Although he wasn't fooled the first time so there is a chance that he might not be fooled this time either.
