Families in Poverty. What Can We Do? by Brenda Hann

One of Davis's best lines is "You can solve poverty by helping people create opportunities for themselves" . As CYC practitioners, we will work with a lot of individuals and families who live in poverty. Do you think that you can be that "connection", that "mentor" or that "champion" that will help people by creating opportunities? You task this week is to share resources to help families who are living in poverty. Once you have found a resource that would be helpful to our practice, double click on the screen, add your name to the title and share what you have discovered. You can upload articles, websites, or video's (must contain closed captioning) Provide a brief explanation of your resource and state why you think it will be helpful.

One resource that I was able to find online for families and youth living in poverty is Campaign 2000 which I found on the Family Service Toronto website (https://familyservicetoronto.org/our-services/programs-and-services/campaign-2000/). The purpose of this campaign is to educate the public on child and family poverty in Canada (Family Service Toronto, 2018). The campaign’s goal is to urge the Canadian government to address child and family poverty and make strides to end poverty in Canada as promised by the all-party House of Commons in 1998 (Family Service Toronto, 2018). I think that this resource is helpful since it is advocacy based and in order to create social change, there needs to be social support for the issue. I also think it is helpful since the goal of this campaign is for the government to acknowledge the issue of poverty and provide better resources to families and young people. This is important since the current governments way of addressing poverty is social assistance financially when the way to fully eliminate poverty is to provide resources, increase social supports and create opportunities for those affected by poverty (Nguyen, 2017). To learn more about Campaign 2000, you can visit their website: https://campaign2000.ca.

An organization I found for families and children living in poverty is Front Line Outreach. It is a religious outreach group that takes in and helps families that are impoverished through providing these families with housing or shelter, food, programs and other opportunities for working there way out of poverty. Some other events that Front Line Outreach holds through the involvement of churches is community barbecues and dinners, donation of winter wear and toy drives, a Ribfest fundraiser and more. I think it is helpful as many people rely on religion and church as help for them in the darkest or toughest times of their lives, and knowing how inclusive this organization is said to be it seems very helpful of a variety of children and their families who may need the support.

The website also discusses "Economic Empowerment" and I think that topic fits in the category of our field as CYCP's because if we can be a positive influence towards people that need that support I believe that you can and I can break the cycle for that individual or individual's life. Education can be the catalyst needed to pull families and communities out of the cycle of poverty. Knowledge gives children the power to dream of a better future and the confidence needed to pursue a full education, which in turn will help generations to come. This organization is part of a legal clinic that focuses on the families who have housing issues due to poverty such as being homeless or struggling to find the housing at a good price. ACTO also provides legal and law reform work, so you can review many documents and information about the laws and human rights of housing.

This resource is helpful for families who are living in poverty. This website can find and help some people the shelters without feeling stressed if they will be homeless for a long time. It offers the "Tenant Duty Counsel Program (TDCP) which provides advice, assistance and resources for tenants who have some problems with their Landlord. It also sets the "Low-Income Energy Network (LIEN), so this program can help low-income Ontarians to manage their financials for paying electricity, natural gas, and other utility costs in their shelters. There already have some questions and answers for tenants who do not know how to buy proper shelter, to find the answers such as bringing the pet in the apartment, to learn paying the rent, to do the steps of moving out and to fight back for getting the human rights to housing. There have some blogs to the readers to learn something or find the answers such as the tips before signing a rental housing lease for the students. This resource can benefit some families that they can gain the knowledge of their human rights to housing in Toronto.

Here is a link to the website: https://www.acto.ca/

A great resource for educative purposes that I found is the Canadian Poverty Institute. This website enables it's viewers to learn more about poverty all across Canada. The Canadian Poverty Institute recognizes that there are multiple levels to poverty and homelessness not just in Canada, but around the world being: Material, Social, and Spiritual Poverty. Furthermore, the website displays multiple facts about homelessness in Canada. Also on the website, you are able to explore pages upon pages of news, events, the different types of work that the institute have done, and overall what their organization is about.

This resource can be of great importance to CYCs and anyone else of the like because this website offers a collective overview of poverty and homelessness that is present in our backyards. The Canadian Poverty Institute is a website that can serve as a one-stop shop to anyone seeking more information about this issue as well as maybe seeking resources to acquire assistance for themselves, as well as others.

Website: https://www.povertyinstitute.ca/

An organisation I found is called Family Promise.
Family promise's goal is to help families in poverty to achieve sustainable independence. They provide food, shelter, and support services for the families that are homeless. This organisation also is there to advocate as well as educate many about poverty and what everyone can do to combat it.

Their vision is,
" A NATION IN WHICH EVERY FAMILY HAS A HOME, A LIVELIHOOD, AND THE CHANCE TO BUILD A BETTER FUTURE".

There are 6 programs under this organisation: Shelter Program, Union County Program, Family Mentoring, Community Initiatives, New Beginnings and Houses for Change.

This organisation would be helpful because their 6 programs are related to helping support those living in poverty. It is specific to those cases, specialized programs. It includes having access to counselling, shelter, housing, and more.

Resource: Government of Canada Website
The website I chose as a resource for children and youth who live in poverty is the Government of Canada website. They claim that they have implemented a strategy whose purpose is to reduce child poverty in Ontario by %25 through targeted investments and supports for children and youth. The website highlights some achievements Ontario has made in 2014 in the fight against poverty. This information may give hope to the low-income person who is looking for information and resources. Breaking the Cycle of Poverty for Children and Youth provides links to supports and services, organized into categories; financial benefits, financial benefits for children and youth, services for youth leaving care, and education programs. The financial benefits include the Ontario Child Benefit and Financial Support for Childcare. Financial benefits for children and youth include Dental Care, Mental Health Support and Services for Youth Leaving Care of a Children's Aid Society at 18. Finally, the education programs include Aboriginal Education Strategy, After-school Program, Life After High School Program, and Urban and Priority High Schools Initiative. These resources are pertinent to the survival of children and youth living under the poverty line, and their families (if they have one). A major contributing factor to social problems like poverty, is misinformation and lack of resources or access to supports. So, the information provided by this website is extremely relevant to low-income families.
https://www.ontario.ca/page/breaking-cycle-poverty-children-and-youth

Resource: Ontario Coalition Against Poverty

The resource that I chose was the Ontario Coalition Against Poverty. The main purposes and goals of this organization is to educate individuals about poverty and the effects of discriminating others based on their lack of wealth, while also working to empower and encourage those living in poverty through the implementation of social justice work that aim to assist members of the population who are currently living in poverty. This organization also specializes in working with members of the indigenous community as well as immigrants who are new to the country and are experiencing poverty as a result. I believe that this organization would be helpful for our profession as it works to provide this population with adequate and safe basic needs and resources such as housing while also doing as much as they can to fight and provide justice to the members of this community to ensure that they are living the best ways that they can given their situations with the hope that they will no longer need these types of resources.

http://ocap.ca/our-work-2/

The organization that I have chosen to speak about is called Opportunity For Advancement, it is located in downtown Toronto at 54 Wolseley Street, Toronto, Ontario. At this organization they provide support groups and programs for women and families living in poverty. Within these programs and support groups they offer training for job opportunities. Additionally, what this community centre does is offer outreach to isolated women. The centre focuses on supporting women who are looking for economic self reliance for their family and their self. I believe this community centre would be a benefit for families living in poverty, for example, they have a program called Preparing for change, like mentioned early it helps women gain economic independence. Additionally, another program is Shape Your Life Boxing, within this program they offer a support group that focuses on working with women that have been recovering from mental health problems, furthermore, to help women handle stress and plan for their and their families future.

The link for this resource is: https://www.211toronto.ca/detail/en/81104

An organization that I found is called "A Place Called Home". APCH is a non profit organization that provides shelter and support services for the homeless or those who are at risk of being homeless. This organization helps youth, adults, couples and families in the Lindsay area since 1995. This resource is beneficial for a variety of individuals living in poverty and needing assistance in getting their basic needs met. They offer shelter, outreach support and after care programs, programs specifically for youth in unstable situations as well as prevention programs. APCH is also able to provide individuals and families with referrals to outside resources to make sure that every single one of their client's needs are met. The link to their website is included below.
