Summary

In the beginning of the book, it introduces the class and the cirriculum. It mentions that the class needs no books and does not have any grade; however, the class is not easy. It is a class that will make you think. Morrie, the teacher struggles with the life threatening condition, ALS. He has not had the best childhood, but tries to find the best in every person. Because of this, Morries wants to teach about what is important. He realizes that no other teacher prepares their students for the mental side of being an adult and he wants to be that teacher. He succeeds. Mitch is his student. He does not know what he wants to do with his life, but has many passions, and Morrie tries to encourage him to follow in that direction. After all of Mitch's classes, he does not follow his passions, but instead goes into the business and journalism world to follow around people and get their stories. However, he is not happy at all. He breaks one of his most important promises. The promise to keep in touch with his "Coach"(Albom 31), Morrie. Mitch ended up flicking on the TV to find a news broadcast on Morrie and Morrie's condition. He later goes to Morrie's house after a big interal battle and they catch up with each other's lives. He, at first, is uncomfortable with the help that Morrie need, but later comes to terms with it and is the one helping him. Mitch's visits become more and more frequent and the bond between them grows stronger. They continue the lessons in the study of Morrie's home and talk about the emotional and mental side of life. Soon the topic of death comes up. More specically, Morrie's death. Everyone knew that once the disease hit his lungs, he wou;d pass. He was okay with it. He actually liked parts of this disease. He realized that he could be pitying himself, or he could use his time wisely. He connected with everyone and formed bonds that people could only imagine, teaching them what no one else does in his time left. As his condition gets worse and his coughing increases as the disease gets closerto his lungs, the topic of death comes up more often. More people come to terms with the idea. He gets weaker and weaker and his teachers go on. His most important lesson: do not fear death. Soon he passes and as promised, Mitch visits his grave on Tuesdays.

Not a lot of stories or books talk about death and if they do, then they always skim over it. Sadly, death is a very real thing that everyone has to deal with at some point in time. I liked that this book showed death in a very real situation, spread awareness about a very serious condition, and taught many lessons along the way. I would recommend this book very highly.
