Germinal Stage (Weeks 1-2)

The germinal stage starts at conception when the sperm and egg cell join in one of the two fallopian tubes. The treated egg is known as a zygote. Only a couple hours after conception, the single-celled zygote starts making an excursion down the fallopian cylinder to the uterus. A zygote starts as a one-cell structure that is made when a sperm and egg combine. The genetic makeup and sex of the baby are set at this point. During the first week after conception, the zygote divides and multiplies, going from a one-cell structure to two cells, then four cells, then eight cells, and so on. This process of cell division is called mitosis. Mitosis is a fragile process, and fewer than one-half of all zygotes survive beyond the first two weeks.

The embryonic stage plays an important role in the development of the brain.
Around a month after conception, the neural tube structures. This tube will later form into the focal sensory system including the spinal cord and brain. The neural tube starts to frame alongside a zone known as the neural plate. The most punctual indications of improvement of the neural tube are the development of two edges that structure along each side of the neural plate.
Upon implantation, this multi-cell organic entity is called an incipient organism. Presently veins develop, shaping the placenta. The placenta is a construction associated with the uterus that gives sustenance and oxygen from the mother to the creating incipient organism through the umbilical line. Essential designs of the undeveloped organism begin to form into territories that will turn into the head, chest, and mid-region. During the undeveloped stage, the heart starts to thump, and organs structure and start to work. The neural cylinder structures along the rear of the incipient organism, forming into the spinal cord and cerebrum.

Fetal Stage (Weeks 9-40)

The fetal period of prenatal develop marks more important changes in the brain. This period of development begins during the ninth week and lasts until birth. This stage is marked by amazing change and growth.
The early body systems and structures established in the embryonic stage continue to develop. The neural tube develops into the brain and spinal cord and neurons continue to form. Once these neurons have formed, they begin to migrate to their correct locations. Synapses, or the connections between neurons, also begin to develop.
When the organism is about nine weeks old, the embryo is called a fetus. At this stage, the fetus is about the size of a kidney bean and begins to take on the recognizable form of a human being as the “tail” begins to disappear.
From 9–12 weeks, the sex organs begin to differentiate. At about 16 weeks, the fetus is approximately 4.5 inches long. Fingers and toes are fully developed, and fingerprints are visible. By the time the fetus reaches the sixth month of development (24 weeks), it weighs up to 1.4 pounds. Hearing has developed, so the fetus can respond to sounds. The internal organs, such as the lungs, heart, stomach, and intestines, have formed enough that a fetus born prematurely at this point has a chance to survive outside of the mother’s womb. Throughout the fetal stage the brain continues to grow and develop, nearly doubling in size from weeks 16 to 28. Around 36 weeks, the fetus is almost ready for birth.

Physical development. Adolescence is a time of change throughout the body. A growth spurt usually occurs near the time of puberty. Girls begin to develop breasts and start their periods. Boys grow facial hair. Both boys and girls grow pubic hair. Boys may lag behind girls in height during these years, but they usually end up taller.

Cognitive development. This is how the brain develops the abilities to think, learn, reason, and remember. Kids this age typically focus on the present, but they are starting to understand that what they do now can have long-term effects. They are also beginning to see that issues are not just clear-cut and that information can be interpreted in different ways.

Moral Development. When children are younger, their family, culture, and religion greatly influence their moral decision-making. During the early adolescent period, peers have a much greater influence. Peer pressure can exert a powerful influence because friends play a more significant role in teens' lives. Furthermore, the new ability to think abstractly enables youth to recognize that rules are simply created by other people. As a result, teens begin to question the absolute authority of parents, schools, government, and other traditional institutions.

Physical Development. Physical changes from puberty continue during middle adolescence. Most males will have started their growth spurt, and puberty-related changes continue. They may have some voice cracking, for example, as their voices lower. Some develop acne. Physical changes may be nearly complete for females, and most girls now have regular periods.

Cognitive Development. A child in middle adolescence has some knowledge of using mechanisms of thought that are more complex. Expands thought to incorporate more futuristic and metaphysical questions. Questions are also more extensive. Analyses are also more detailed. Think about his or her own code of ethics and start shaping it (What do I think is right, for instance?). It thinks about various possibilities and starts to establish its own identity (Who am I, for example). Thinks about potential future targets and starts to systematically analyze them (What do I like, for example?). Think of his or her own plans and start designing them. Long-term thinking begins. Uses systemic thinking and starts to impact interactions with others.

Moral Development. By middle adolescence teens have begun to develop their own moral code. Their behavior early on during middle adolescence may not be consistent with some of their moral conclusions. This isn't hypocrisy; they really just haven't made the connection yet. It's the reason they may genuinely believe smoking is bad, but they'll try it anyway. They will usually be more likely to match their behavior to their beliefs by the end of this period.

Physical Development. Late adolescents generally have completed physical development and grown to their full adult height. They usually have more impulse control by now and may be better able to gauge risks and rewards accurately.

Cognitive Development. To reflect on less self-centered ideas and personal decision-making, a child in late adolescence uses complex thought. Thoughts on more global topics have increased, such as justice, history, politics, and patriotism. Idealistic viewpoints on particular subjects or issues are also created. It is possible to discuss and grow intolerance of contrary viewpoints. Start to concentrate on making career choices by thinking. Thought starts to reflect on their evolving position in adult society.

Moral Development. In this stage, laws and social order reign supreme. Rules and regulations are to be followed and obeyed. In the above example, the man should not steal the medicine because it is against the law. Each person becomes more aware of the impact of everyone’s actions on others and focuses now on their own role, following the rules, and obeying authorities.

Physical Development

Our physical maturation is complete by the time we reach early adulthood, though our height and weight can increase slightly. Our physical abilities, such as muscle strength, response speed, sensory abilities, and cardiac functioning, are at their highest in early adulthood. During this time, most professional athletes are at the top of their game, and many women have children in their early adult years.

Cognitive Development

Early adulthood is a time of relativistic thinking, in which young people begin to become aware of more complexities in life. During early adulthood, cognition begins to stabilize, reaching a peak around the age of 35. Early adulthood is a time of relativistic thinking, in which young people begin to become aware of more than simplistic views of right vs. wrong. They begin to look at ideas and concepts from multiple angles and understand that a question can have more than one right (or wrong) answer. The need for specialization results in pragmatic thinking—using logic to solve real-world problems while accepting contradiction, imperfection, and other issues. Finally, young adults develop a sort of expertise in either education or career, which further enhances problem-solving skills and the capacity for creativity.

Social Development

Young adults need to form intimate, loving relationships with other people. Success leads to strong relationships, while failure results in loneliness and isolation. This stage covers the period of early adulthood when people are exploring personal relationships. Erikson believed it was vital that people develop close, committed relationships with other people. Those who are successful at this step will form relationships that are enduring and secure.

Middle Adulthood (35-64 years)

Physical Development

The aging process becomes more visible during middle adulthood. Presbyopia is a condition in which the eyes lose their ability to respond to stimuli at different distances about the age of 60. The majority of people between the ages of 40 and 60 will need corrective lenses to correct vision issues. Certain eye disorders, such as glaucoma, are more common in middle-aged adults than in younger adults. Hearing continues to deteriorate: 14% of middle-aged Americans have hearing loss. Skin continues to dry out, making it more vulnerable to wrinkles, particularly on the delicate face region. When the skin dries out and thins, age spots and blood vessels become more visible. The muscle-to-fat ratio for both men and women also changes throughout middle adulthood, with an accumulation of fat in the stomach area. Women experience a gradual decline in fertility as they approach the onset of menopause—the end of the menstrual cycle—around 50 years old. This process involves hormonal changes and may last anywhere from six months to five years. Because of the shifting hormone levels, women going through menopause often experience a range of other symptoms, such as anxiety, poor memory, inability to concentrate, depressive mood, irritability, mood swings, and less interest in sexual activity.

Cognitive Development

The key focus of middle adulthood is on two types of intelligence: crystallized and fluid intelligence. Our crystallized wisdom is built on a foundation of cumulative knowledge and experience—the knowledge, skills, and techniques we've acquired over the course of our lives. As we get older, this type of intelligence continues to stay the same or even strengthen. Adults, for example, have relatively stable to rising intelligence test scores until their mid-30s to mid-50s (Bayley & Oden, 1955). Fluid intelligence, on the other hand, is more reliant on basic information-processing abilities and begins to deteriorate long before reaching middle age. Cognitive processing speed slows down during this stage of life, as does the ability to solve problems and divide attention. However, practical problem-solving skills tend to increase. These skills are necessary to solve real-world problems and figure out how to best achieve a desired goal.

Social Development

Adults need to create or nurture things that will outlast them, often by having children or creating a positive change that benefits other people. Success leads to feelings of usefulness and accomplishment, while failure results in shallow involvement in the world. During adulthood, we continue to build our lives, focusing on our career and family. Those who are successful during this phase will feel that they are contributing to the world by being active in their home and community. Those who fail to attain this skill will feel unproductive and uninvolved in the world.

Late Adulthood (65 years and up)

Physical Development

During late adulthood the skin continues to lose elasticity, reaction time slows further, muscle strength and mobility diminishes, hearing and vision decline, and the immune system weakens. Memory degenerates in old age, so older adults have a harder time remembering and attending to information. In general, an older person’s procedural memory tends to remain stable, while working memory declines.

Cognitive Development

During old age, a general decline in memory is very common, due to the decrease in speed of encoding, storage, and retrieval of memory. Neurocognitive disorder, formerly called dementia, is a broad category of brain diseases that cause a gradual long-term decrease in the ability to think and remember. There is no cure for neurocognitive disorder, but there are many strategies to improve quality of life for people with this disorder, such as daily exercise programs and cognitive or behavioral therapies.

Social Development

At this point in development, people look back on the events of their lives and determine if they are happy with the life that they lived or if they regret the things they did or didn't do.
Erikson's theory differed from many others because it addressed development throughout the entire lifespan, including old age. Older adults need to look back on life and feel a sense of fulfillment. Success at this stage leads to feelings of wisdom, while failure results in regret, bitterness, and despair.
At this stage, people reflect back on the events of their lives and take stock. Those who look back on a life they feel was well-lived will feel satisfied and ready to face the end of their lives with a sense of peace. Those who look back and only feel regret will instead feel fearful that their lives will end without accomplishing the things they feel they should have.
