Chinese 1A name reflection by Grant Castner

Reflect on what you read and what we discussed today. Think about the questions posted on the board. What happens when we give people new names they don't want? What happens when we don't show concern for important parts of their identity?

My main takeaway is to simply be respectful. When people hear “I’m gonna say this wrong” almost every time they meet someone new it gets tiring and can make those people feel disrespected. Adding on, people shouldn’t expect others to cater towards them. While they can if they want to, no one should feel forced or required to give themselves a “white” name so others have an easier time.

They don’t feel like they are important. They wouldn’t feel honored if someone gave them a nickname that they didn’t want. They would feel inferior or disrespected. When we don’t show concern about important parts of identity then it’s like we never even cared about the person in the first place. Everybody has an important part of their identity and if you don’t care about it, then it’ll seem like they seem less important. Everyone just wants to be respected. No one ever wants to be disrespected.

My main takeaway is that calling someone by a nickname makes Them feel that you think you’re superior and they are not worth the effort of proper pronunciation. Often making them feel disrespected and less confident in their own name. If people don’t try and show effort they might end up feeling that they are not wanted or involved or needed, or that something is wrong and they need to change. They want to feel respected.

It shows u respect them as a person and who they are.

I feel like when people give nicknames to others, it makes that person feel like they should be ashamed of their original/given name. If you don’t bother showing any interest or concerns to learning their name then it just comes off as disrespectful and ignorant. Names are a big part of what makes a person them, you can avoid coming off as disrespectful just by asking them how to pronounce their name or simply just not give them a nickname without their permission. You shouldn’t have to feel ashamed or embarrassed if you pronounce anyone’s name wrong because we can’t expect everyone to know.

A big takeaway I would say is that just not only should you show respect and care into pronouncing someone’s name you should also show respect for their culture too and way of life. I think people feel disrespected because people were given their name and it’s their identity and you make your own nickname for someone it almost strips away who they are. If you don’t show concern for pronouncing they also could feel that you don’t care for them.

What I took away is how important it is to not only try to pronounce someone’s name correctly but to take the time to learn about someone’s name and ask respectful questions you have them I don’t think it is rude to ask “how is your named pronounce” but it is not okay to put a easier to pronounce name on someone it is also Important to learn ab someone’s name if you can ask them directly and to speak up I also took away from this is that it is okay to ask someone how to pronounce there name rather than pronouncing it wrong the first time
