His father, Jainulabdeen Marakayar was a boat owner and imam of a local mosque. He was an honest generous man who possessed innate wisdom and a generosity of spirit. His mother Ashiamma, a housewife fed many people everyday, thus exhibiting profound kindness. Kalam himself was an honest and self-disciplined boy with values like goodness and kindness.

Kalam's term lasted from 25 July 2002, to 25 July 2007. One of the important things that Kalam did during his presidency was promoting religious tolerance and intercaste dialogue. Another interesting fact is that when he first moved to Rashtrapati Bhawan, he asked all luxurious rooms to be locked up as he didn’t want to use them. He moved to a small room where he kept his bed. He used the same room to work and sleep. Not only this, but he also kept his dining room locked and often had his meals on the floor with the staff who worked with him.

Unfortunately, he breathed his last while he was delivering a lecture at the Indian Institute of Management in Shillong on 27th July, 2015, . He experienced some discomfort in his chest while climbing the stairs but he made it to the auditorium.  Five minutes into his speech, he collapsed on the stage. He was rushed to Bethany Hospital, however he was declared dead at 7:45 pm. Even during the last moments of his life, Kalam retained his sense of humour.
