Summary

This article outlined a module in which students solved real-world problems through technology-rich, engineering design activities that integrate both mathematics and science. The module consisted of 5 components that start with "E" as listed.

How I will Use this in my Own Classroom

I think these 5 components of computer-aided design for problem solving flow very nicely, and would like to incorporate it into my classroom.

In Geometry, we are working on using algebra to prove geometric theorems. More specifically, we are distance formula to classify triangles. We are also proving how/why certain points of a triangle lie on, outside, or inside a circle.

I could start off by presenting a video to grab their attention. A potential real-life problem could be that we are launching a rocket into the air and in order for it launch straight upward, we must find the center of the circle and measure the distances to ensure maximum speed.

I would have them explore what works best, design their rocket on a software, perhaps have them print it if we had access to 3D printers, and of course provide extension and evaluation questions.

Critiques

Something I would want teachers to consider before implementing the evidence-based practice is student biases. This activity is very technology heavy, and includes softwares that may not be easily accessible to all students. Furthermore, expensive equipment such as 3-D printers may only be accessible to more affluent schools.

Furthermore, too much technology at once can be overwhelming to the students. I think it is important that we establish a stable platform where all students can access materials and then slowly incorporate the technology that enhances learning so that students have an overall meaningful experience.
