Haley: She is kind of selfish at the very beginning, and she has some very normal childish feelings and thoughts about the worlds. She also had to worry about first world problems.
Amanda: She wanted to go to the store with her mom at the beginning, but now she has to worry if she will survive until next month, or if someone else will die.
Grant: I feel like she is becoming very mature, where she is trying to understand what the world is truly about around her.

1 Question: How is the death of her father going to affect the relationship with her mom?
2 Question: Will she still have any hope left at the end of the genocide/book?
3 Question: How is the death of her father going to affect the family relationship?
1 Prediction: Geak is not going to survive to the end of the book.
2 Prediction: Mom is not going to be really organized, and thus their family is going to be revealed as a city-family.
Comment: These chapters are really sad, and the book in general is more emotional than Maus.

Haley: We can't afford to go to Cambodia because we have more problems and we are scared of that region for now.
Amanda: We think we are the best, and we didn't want to back there because it would remind us of a bad time in our history.
Grant: I think the Americans were oblivious to the genocide because they just came out of Vietnam, and didn't want to go back there.

Haley: Slavery is our version of genocide, we fulfilled pretty much all of the 8 steps.
Amanda: Also our internment camps were a lot like a genocide. We didn't kill them them, but we did follow most of the 8 steps.
Grant: I feel like most of the deaths were unintentional, but there are some factors that show it is a genocide. I feel like it wasn't government controlled and each one was a mini-genocide in its own way.

Haley: "Oh my god, I cried during that..." The italics were sort of like a prediction, that she did in order to understand and feel better about their deaths.
Grant: "I didn't cry..." I feel like they were in italics to show an out-of-body experience like she wasn't there, but she felt this was how this happened.
Amanda: Definitely a way for us to connect with her more, so we can delve into her mind, and understand it more in depth.

Haley: Knowing brings closure, but knowing also brings a lot of pain, unless it happened in a peaceful way. But not knowing brings imagination, and imagination brings the idea of torture.
Amanda: I would rather not know because it can bring so much hope, but it also allows us to think that it was quick or it was painful and prolonged.
Grant: "Ignorance is bliss..." The idea that he is unknown where he is dead or alive, allows us to really hold onto the idea that he is alive, or he was killed quickly.

Haley: I feel like that was a really human moment when Pa and Ma held hands over Geak while they were sleeping. I feel like if you are dehumanized then you don't really feel anything.
Amanda: I feel like Loung holds on to her humanity by simply holding on to her memories. She really has a short life compared to others, and thus she holds on to her memories in order to hold on to herself.
Grant: I feel like being a family really kept them together and helped them retain their humanity.

Haley: Everything is fed well, everything is equal, but it doesn't sound good in real life because humans always want power.
Amanda: Every dictatorship has someone think they are in the right, and they genuinely think they are what's best for everyone. You really can't hate them for that.
Grant: They did try to adopt socialism, but that is pretty much unattainable. Instead, they took soviet-style socialism.

Haley: She really seems to trust everyone still, I mean she still tells her Ma that the soldiers said he would come back.
Amanda: She still kind of trusts blindly, and from that, she is headstrong, and is blind to things that are actually different from what she perceives.
Grant: She still is kind of spoiled. She still has her entire family until two family members die, and she doesn't really know how to understand that and move on.
