However, comparing to an earthquake in Haiti with 7.0 magnitude they had a death toll of more than 300,000 people. Even though Japan had greater magnitude than Haiti, Haiti's damages were obviously greater than the damages in Japan as Japan had preparations and safety precautions taken. Thus, level of preparedness that Japan had made a big difference to thousands of lives and decrease the death toll magnificently.

These preparations include having evacuation. When the people are prepared they know what to do next and they will also be aware. The damage caused in the earthquake will be manageable too. This also decrease the number of people getting injured and being killed.

The amount of preparation taken by the citizens makes a huge difference to the impact of the earthquake. The more preparations the people have, the lesser damage of the earthquake will bring.

For example, in Japan. they have annual earthquake drills which is attended by a large number of people, 800,000, to educate and prepare the community along with other rescue services about earthquakes. Students in schools have their own drills every month and are taught how to protect themselves. This is a large factor on why in a 8.9 Magnitude earthquake, the death toll was only at 28,000 as everyone knew how to evacuate and protect themselves when the earthquake hit.
