The responsibilities involved in being a lighting designer is to closely collaborate with the creative team of the production to know how to light certain pieces of costume or sets, this makes it easier for them so they dont have to wait on the run throughs to correctly change lighting.

They also have a huge responsibility of designing concept lighting ideas including the tone of the piece, the pacing and a design that heavily goes along and supports the narrative of the piece. They also forward their design concepts with the creative team to help them and ensure lighting and the sets/costumes match as closely as possible.

Programming and operations is a huge responsibility for the lighting designer, the designer can pass on their designs to a designated programmer and they have to ensure their designs are possible with the current rig that is present in the venue, or the lighting designer can personally program it in themself if they don't have a lighting programmer. It is vital that if the lighting designer is also going to program and operate at the same time, they are present at crucial rehearsals and have close coordination with the stage manager and deputy stage manager to ensure that all cues, and lighting states are refined and correct to them scenes and set pieces.

Skills

Some basic skills that are expected of a lighting designer are Artistic and Creative skills, which entails being able to have good vision with colours and concepts, and being able to understand visual storytelling.

They need good technical skills, such as knowledge of different fixtures of lights, and the equipment used in that field. Having a basic understanding of electricals. Having proficiency in software, and having heavy experience with programming, and operating lighting desks like Chamsys MagicQ.

Alongside them two, they need problem-solving skills. If a cue isn't correct, or there is something out of place or not activating a light when meant to, it is crucial they know what they are doing to resolve this.

Communication and Teamwork is something that everyone in the theatre needs.

They need good physical and practical skills such as having a good stamina for good long hours whilst rehearsing and doing tech run-throughs, they also need the ability to work at height like using an A-Frame, or a Scaffold whilst lifting heavy equipment either with their hand, assistance from another member, or a pully system.

Qualifications

They can either undertake a formal course in their desired field, or have an apprenticeship in technical theatre and stage management.

It's good to have hands-on experience with lighting theatre productions, this can be in both a professional setting or an academic setting. A good portfolio will help along their way in their career progression path as showing their work will help boost them up heavily.

Typical career progression path and opportunities for development

There are a few entry level roles in this field that you can get with these qualifications, such as starting off by being an assistant lighting designer, or a lighting technician/operator

You have the mid-level role of being a lighting designer, and then after a while of doing that, there is the possibility to move onto a senior level role in this field of becoming either the artistic director for lighting, or the lead lighting designer.

The opportunities for development may entail attending networking events, broadening your technology expertise, attending workshops or masterclasses, you can even undertake advanced education and training in certain lighting desks, etc. Or, you can offer mentorships to new lighting designers.

Professional Bodies and Organisations

Association of Lighting Designers offers professional development opportunities, networking events and a platform for sharing best practices in lighting designs, they also provide training and mentorship programs for emerging designers.

International Association of Lighting Designers focuses on professional development and standards for environmental lighting designers.

Examples/real world scenarios

In Hamilton, the lighting design was produced by Howell Binkley, which helped show the musical's dynamic energy and transition. They utilised the moving fixtures and programmed cues, they showed how fast-paced the story was.

Paule Constable is a popular lighting designer who has earned multi Olivier Awards. She worked on the War House production, and used lighting to create emotional depth, and she used that to show the way for the audience's focus in a small stage design.
