Welcome to 2022 and your new assignment. During this assignment you will learn new skills and techniques, go on trips and visit’s and hopefully enjoy yourself a lot. You will learn about the design cycle and develop your analytical skills and practice writing reflective notes. 

Introduction.  Course, assignment, ways of working. 

Macro influences ~ Students find definitions for, lived culture, high and popular culture, norms, values, influences. 

Students complete a quiz about themselves. Quiz covers their views on music, issues such  as the environment, Black Lives Matter, the Me too movement, meat is murder, etc. Then looks at life style choices about food being a veggie or vegan. Plus questions about pets, women’s rights, sport. Students ask each other questions developing communication skills. 

Task  Based on the the answers they gave students write up a brief description of themselves. Apply writing skills. 

Practical task. Students complete carbon paper drawings and mono prints. Using a selfie style photo students create images of them selves. The image will include information about themselves, such as age, names, favourite band, etc, by drawing into the images. 

Extension activity students invert the images they made of themselves on the photocopier and then use the print outs to create a mixed media collage. 

Reflect and review activity. 

Students reflect on the materials and techniques they have explored during the day then identify and communicate the problems they have solved. 

Set homework. Add colour to their carbon paper prints using pastels and pencil crayons.

 In this introductory lesson you will consider what identity is and the import things that make up your identity. These might be your family and friends or it might be issues such as looking after the environment or being a vegetarian. 
 
 You will also take part in a quiz that helps you reflect on the important things that make you who you are.

Judith Supine Collage. Students investigate the artist Judith Supine, creating a research page for homework. 

In class working with selfie style photos students create a Judith Supine style collage of themselves before distorting the images. The activity will develop their practical skills and solving problems techniques.

Working in 2/3s Make garment in the style of New Romantics, Punks, Modettes, etc.  Using bin bags, bubble wrap, tape and dust sheets students create their version of a garment one of the youth cultures they have explored would wear. (Approach, communication, practical skills. )

However, in order to get the best marks you have to make sure you are considering your clients wishes. The assignment asks you to create an artwork around the theme of identity for submission to the Liverpool Biennial or John Moore’s Open below are details to guide you.
  
Client  The Liverpool Biennial​

​Context​ - The Liverpool Biennial  founded in 1998 is an important overview of the UK’s  contemporary art scene. Taking place every two years across the city’s public spaces, galleries and historic buildings. This year young practitioners have been asked to create and develop ideas that explore identity through an ALTERNATIVE SELF PORTAIT.​

​Requirements​ You are required to produce ‘alternative’ self-portraits. This can be presented  as one piece or a series of experimental pieces that could be developed further. It can be 2Dimensional or 3Dimensional work.​

​Audience​ The pieces will be aimed at 13-19 year olds to promote individuality and celebrate differences we share as developing young people.​

​Deadline​ 24th November   Assessor​  Ian Prewitt.
 
Write a proposal explaining what you work is and how is it alternative (different form a traditional portrait.) Make suggestions to how you want it displayed and explain why will it appeal to young people.

Winter Watch Parade 2021 - 2 weeks.

Students design and make flags for use in the Chester Winter Watch Parade. It is important that students have opportunities to use their creative skills on live projects. This is even more important during COVID times when such opportunities may be limited. 

Students research the Chester Winter Watch Parade and its artistic director Russell Kirk. Creating visual and written information about the event, it’s history and how the characters in the parade are made. 

Students work in pairs to create a decorative flag for the parade. Using paint, printing blocks, dust sheet, glue and a bamboo cain. 

 Task 1 Research

 On your phones find a definition of Gothic, Tudor and Victorian architecture. Then collect pictures of Tudor, Gothic and Victorian architecture, including buildings in Chester. Include photos of close-up detail, arches, doors, windows carved decoration, gargoyles etc.

Look at the colour's and textures in your photos and create worksheet backgrounds that suit the style you are working with. You can use coffee, ink, tea and paint. Add a suitable boarder and a title.

Next you must include written information about the different architectural styles you have researched.

 

You will also learn about artists and fashion designers who have used Baroque Architecture as inspiration in their work.

Weeks six to eight
Respond to a creative Fashion brief
Students who are taking the F&T route of this project will complete a Fashion Design final piece.
All other students will use the time to focus on their chosen specialism. 

 

1.    Print out photos taken on your trip of the exterior and interior of the buildings you went to. Make sure you include the pictures taken in the Roman galleries. If you did not go on the trip take photos of the college building, or find images of Chester on the internet. 

2.    Now on an A3 size page in your sketchbook arrange them in a visually interesting way. Consider colour, shape, size, composition, pattern, etc. 

3.    Then either on a tag or included on your design reflect on what you found interesting or what you learnt about the building you visited.

4.    You could include your thoughts on the ceilings of the various rooms you went into. The decoration on the buildings, the carved stone and wood you saw for example. What thoughts did you have about the way people in the past lived. 

 

1.    Last week on your trip you made rubbings in Chester Cathedral. Today you are going to collect rubbings from around the college. Making rubbings and then including them in collages is another exciting way to visually record buildings. 

 

1.    You have 2 options for your practical activity today. Either using your rubbings made at Chester Cathedral plus the photos you took during your trip create a minimum of 2 small decorative collages of what you saw. 20cm X 20 cm in black and white.

 

1.    If you did not go on the trip, then make rubbings from around the college building and use them with photos of the building to make a collage.

Trip Rules.    We are only in Chester a city where most of you live. But please stay together, if you get separated then you slow down the whole group as we will have to wait for you. 

¡Introduction.   As you walk through the city of Chester you are surrounded by pattern, decoration and shapes, different styles of architecture everywhere you look. Today is your chance to get to know your city better by having a closer look at it and getting to know some of its less well know spaces. 

Today you will have a guided walking tour of the city centre and you will learn to identify Gothic, Tudor and Georgian buildings and know the differences. You will learn about Chester’s famous row’s and visit one of the best Gothic buildings in the northwest! By the end of the day I believe you will see your city quiet differently. 

As you learn new things you need to try and remember them. You will write up the day’s activities as part of your research for the current assignment. 

Things you need to find out on the walking tour include

Chester Cathedral. 

You need to record your visit to the cathedral carefully. Take photos but also make rubbings of some of the carved floors you see. 

Chester Cathedral is a largely gothic building. There are parts of it that are older and you will be shown these as you go round but the main style of the building is Gothic. Gothic architecture is easy to spot, look at the arches, the shape of windows and the archways over the doors. They all come to a point. 

Gothic buildings also have a lot of decoration carved into it, take photos of your 4 favourite pieces of decoration. 

The cloisters are a covered area around a garden where the monks used to walk to contemplate god. The cloisters have beautiful stained glass windows, take at least 4 photos of your favourite sections. 

Now go outside into to the small garden, in the middle is a modern statue that is a fountain. The story is that when this new fountain was switched on the water running over the bronze washed small particles of bronze into the pond and poisoned all the fish! But I don’t know for sure. Check the pond for fish and take photos of the fountain. 

Come back into the cloisters and walk around to a room that has a beautiful ceiling. The roof is supported by columns that fan out and so is called fan vaulting. Take photos of this space. 

Next walk through one of the oldest doors in the cathedral. It is set in a round arch. This style is called Romanesque, take a picture of the beautifully decorated arch over the heavy oak door. 

You are now in the largest part of the cathedral look at the decorated ceiling built of wood. This is a modern renovation. Take photos. 

Next stop is the choir stalls, these are where the choir sits during services. Look at the carving around the seats. There is a strange half person half demon drinking a tankard of ale. There is a very strange elephant that is more like a horse with a trunk, there are even dragons take pics of your favourites. 

Not far from the choir stalls carved into a column is a memorial to a wealthy local family. It is strange because the carved stone is painted. Take a photo. 

Finally there is a secret room that Ian came show you. Make sure you find it, it’s beautiful. 

Storyhouse 

This award winning theatre, library, cinema, restaurant and concert venue opened 4 years ago. The queen and Megan Markel came to Chester to open it. Since it’s opening it has transformed the cultural life of the city. Because of Storyhouse there are now also lots of interesting creative jobs based in Chester. 

You will receive a talk at the Storyhouse, find out the following. 

The Grosvenor Museum is the biggest museum and gallery space in Chester. Find out 

2nd Floor is an independent fashion shop which in turn are run by two indie fashion labels Grunge Monkey and Junk Box Apparel. They design their own range of hoodies, T shirts, sweat shirts etc. Selling them on line and from their shop. 

Take photos of the shop and their designs and find out the following. 

Today you are going to use your printing skills to create some cloth for you to use on your shoes. You will use your printing blocks from earlier in the assignment to make these designs.

Week three

Garment construction and sewing machine skill development.

Your final piece needs to have a clear reference to architecture. This can be through the marks you use, the shapes you include, pattern, decoration or colour but you need to work to make your designs top quality. 

To get the higher grades Include notes as you progress that reflect on your progress. Make sure you mention the following. 

         E.g  Drawing, printing, making rubbings in a more artistic way, using          

                photoshop, using the photocopier, working with stencil cut designs.

Try and find information about folk-lore, legend, myth and meaning in your research. Even if the event you look at is new they usually have a theme, story or idea at the costumes, props and sets are developed around, see if you can find out what it is.

PART B - ARTIST RESEARCH

Visit the workshops of processional artist Russell Kirk. He is a giant puppet and prop maker who works across Britain and abroad. You will visit his workshop and see the way he works. Make notes about the materials and techniques he uses and the things he needs to consider when making his designs.

E.g. Strong, weather proof, light to carry.

 You also need to find out how he gets the money he needs to make, organise and run his events and how he works with the local community and local organisations.

 PART C
Take as many photos as you can. But don’t just snap away consider the composition, colours, lighting etc. You may even dress up in some of the costumes if you wish but make sure the photos you take are good as your photography is an assessable part of this assignment. 

Russell is a community artist. Find a definition of a community artist. What do they do? How do they earn money? How do they claim funding? What kinds of projects do they run? What kind of groups in the community do they work with? 

 

PART D 
Fine a university course or apprenticeship in one of the areas associated with festivals. Where is the course, how many years, does it have work placements, what would you study, are there trips and visits, do you work on live projects with artists etc, what employment have graduates got?

 

In part 2 the emphasis is on you to research in line with your own interests. To find out more about the type of skills you want to develop for your career. The assignment contains elements of 3D design, fashion and textile design and fine art and graphics. Extension activities that involve photography and digital design can be easily be added. In this exciting second part to the assignment you will get the chance to create , plan and prepare for the Visual Arts Festival, Street Level 2022. Street Level is taking place on the Saturday 7th May, and will have street artists, graffiti writers, art workshops and activities, stalls, a fashion show, BBQ, open air bar, DJ’s, the lot!

 

There will be art activities throughout the day and your job is to test out the ideas for activities by creating examples, examples that can then be used on social media to publicise the event. You DO NOT HAVE TO DO ALL OF THESE choose 2.  

 

 

As well as creating wonderful examples , you will then discuss the ways you feel the workshops can best be delivered and think of ways of sharing your examples on social media as publicity for the event. 

 

You will then work in groups to create social media content to post on the Street Level page.
