         <description><![CDATA[<p>Ions produce colors when they are burnt in a bunsen burner flame because their electrons are gettting excited.  Each color represents how excited each one is.  A transition is a movement between energy states.  Each transition creates a certain amount of energy released as a single photon.  And that determines its visible color.</p>]]></description>

         <title>How did you do it?</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>First, we lit the bunsen burner and adjusted the flame to a preferred height.  Then we got the coffee stirs that had been soaking in different chemical ions.  One by one we began burning them and seeing what color flame it burned.  Then we recorded our observations on a data table.  And once we were done with the burnt sticks we disposed them in a metal can of sand.  Then we recieved the unknown ion from Mr. Go, and repeated our steps for that one.  Once we figured out what ion it was, we disposed that stick and began cleaning up our experiment.</p>]]></description>

         <title>How did you determine your unknown?</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>When we burnt our unknown stick, we took a picture of the flame and compared it to our previous flame colors.  It was a bright red color, so we then figured out that our unknown ion was Li+.  </p>]]></description>
