Each color represents how excited each one is. A transition is a movement between energy states. Each transition creates a certain amount of energy released as a single photon. And that determines its visible color.

Then we got the coffee stirs that had been soaking in different chemical ions. One by one we began burning them and seeing what color flame it burned. Then we recorded our observations on a data table. And once we were done with the burnt sticks we disposed them in a metal can of sand. Then we recieved the unknown ion from Mr. Go, and repeated our steps for that one. Once we figured out what ion it was, we disposed that stick and began cleaning up our experiment.

It was a bright red color, so we then figured out that our unknown ion was Li+.
