The TEDtalk and article you can find in the other orange blocks provide an interesting view at how modernization theory worked out for Africa. I briefly summarized them and we discussed the following points:

· What is de role of the West in th e developing of Africa as a continent? Is there any?

· If we have to think about a good thing, or advantage the modernization theory brought for development in Africa, what would it be?

In response to Robin's video regarding functionalism:
Durkheim explains social facts existed before societies and will ensure past them. Such facts coerce us to behave in a given way, along social norms. The division of labour and specialisation creates dependancies within societies and groups.
Rapid development and social change may blur these clear divisions of labour, prompting 'anomie' or deviant behaviours from individuals in the society e.g. suicide. As Roopini notes, Durkheim suggests the use of education or institutions to connect people and maintain a shared social fabric / understanding of social norms.
