Hello everyone! I am Moschoula and currently I teach to 16-18 year old in Moschato, Athens, Greece. It is a great opportunity to be amongst people interested in multicultural classes. Being billingual (Greek English), having attended both educational systems as a student and raised for most of my childhood years in multinational environment (crew on cargo ships cause my dad was a seafarer) I used to think it was hard to "blend in" and not stand out.

Now I cherish my experiences because they help me understand the difficulties my students encounter and they give me the necessary drive to work for their engagement with school work as valued individuals.

My reasons for enrolling on this course I believe cultural diversity is an asset we have misused as civilizations for a long time. It is openmindness and diversity that has helped humanity evolve and we should embrace this, in order to become a better society, especially in todays globalized world.

Important issues that need dealing with. Teaching in a multicultural class can be very tricky if first we do not discover and acknowledge our own background and values. We have to know who we are in order to be open to others. Very important is to iclude in our lessons examples that are not stereotyped (ie names, photos). The hardest of all is to balance the local culture they have to understand in order to get by in everyday life without outcasting or underrating their own which is essential to their personality and individuality.

I believe all the issues raised by Alicia and Erica are well discussed and they are very important in every classroom not only multicultural ones.
For me important is to teach how to resolve conflicts in the classroom, something difficult to deal with especially if different cultures and xenophobia are involved.
The answer would be to make sure we teach respect for others, their personality and their culture, through understanding, appreciation and empathy. In todays globalized world where creativity, critical thinking, communication and collaboration are of vital importance in order to survive, learning to accept differences is essential.

You are a reflective practitioner who pro-actively engages with your students and everything they bring to the class. Your engagement with parents and local community allow you to fully understand your students and make the learning experience relevant and effective for them. Your openness and curiosity allow you to integrate different cultural practices into your teaching and ensures that the diversity of every one of your classes is accounted for in the resources and teaching practices used in the classroom.

Take a look at this table with the different answer options to see other ways how cultural diversity can be addressed in the classroom.

This year as part of a project we were working on with our 1st year 16yearold students the theme was Greek traditional clothing, dancing and music, The students focused on similarities between Greek areas but also with people living close to the borders. It was fulfilling to see their amazement especially when they encountered identical traditional songs sang in different countries with local lyrics.
