Rhetorical Awareness

The purpose of this artifact was to teach me how to analyze a reading and the strengths about the reading. To reflect how I practiced analyzing rhetorical situations is asking myself what the main purpose of reading it is. Who is the target audience? Trying to understand the writer's choice in the context of the reading was not easy for me. It was difficult especially when trying to understand who the audience was. Like the reading I was doing the annotations on was called The Devil's Highway, by Luis Alberto Urrea, as well as on an organization called Undocumented Migration Project, and the film called Border South. An integrated quote I would like to include is: “The main purpose of this website is about Undocumented Migration Project, basically attracting people worldwide to try to get donations for those immigrants who are trying to get into America. As it says on the home page "Building Hope Together.” This quote was based on the purpose of the organization UMP. I believe some ideas about my work may influence my writing. I always focus a lot on the main purpose of the readings to understand the reading. Which in a way will help because then it will give me the idea of what I should focus on more when writing so I can build off the purpose of creating the other rhetorical situations to include in my own writings.

Critical Thinking and Composing

The purpose of this artifact was to help learn problem solving and critical thinking. The way I practiced this action was during a peer review workshop, reviewing my peers' work and figuring out ways to help evaluate their work and the sources they use for their writing on Borderland synthesis. The way I composed my arguments to my peers’ writing is focusing on what their thesis was and if it matched with the rest of their writing. But for me, looking over my work is challenging to see my mistakes because I read and it looks fine until I notice small punctuation errors or even fragment sentences. An example of how I took the approach on the assignment: “My approach on editing and revision has never had an effective impact. I believe this because most people in the past that have revised my papers have never given me enough feedback showing what I need to fix or what I need to add. Even just simple formatting advice.” An idea of how it can help me with my writing is that the way I revise other peers’ writing is the way I think about what their thesis is and if it applies to the rest of their writing. I need to ask myself the same questions whether my thesis matches with my evidence and arguments.

Conventions

The purpose of this artifact was to write an essay focusing on the conventions; audience, purpose, and context relating to the genre conventions. The way I practiced this is applying it to an essay where I had to write about the struggles that migrants have. The way I applied the conventions in my essay was able to find the purpose I decided to focus on for my writing. Especially trying to apply my purpose to the audience that I focused on. An integrated quote I would like to include that I believe applies to this goal is: “Throughout these sources, immigrants are shown experiencing desperation and desolation because they are struggling, going through obstacles and dangerous paths to cross the border illegally and getting into trouble at the border.” This shows the focus on the purpose of my essay. Influencing my work later in the future will help me be able to have a structured writing style going through checkboxes making sure my writing is organized and I’m not constantly repeating myself in my writing, like I used to.

The purpose of this artifact was for me to understand how to collaborate with my peers about my writing and getting different feedback on my writing in things I would have probably missed in my own writing. The way I engaged with this is when we had a discussion board open to everyone and put our digital stories, mine was based on a fotonovela. But engaging in the feedback I got was making sure I made my cover page more clear because my instructor had pointed out that I wasn’t making clear sentences. Such as most of them being fragment sentences. I revised my sentences and changed my writing to include more details. I made sure that the purpose of my fotonovela was something I was able to connect to personally by adding my past experience and comparing it to the fotonovela I created. For future purposes I can look back at my revision work and look at how I took my peers' feedback and instructor’s seeing where they saw my strengths and weaknesses in writing. Learning to understand that feedback on my writing helps revise my work to be more confident about my work and so it turns out to be clear and effective.

Reflection

The purpose of this artifact was to reflect upon the field trips that we took whether it was the one the class did about Tucson's birthplace or other accommodated field trips taken on our own. For this reflection I was able to give meaningful detail about the places I visited because one place which was my work and another represented artwork from Tucson like old desert plants and people who came to Tucson. The Monica is a sister restaurant with the other charro restaurants owned by Carlotta Flores, The Monica is named by one of the aunts who started the charro restaurants. The Museum of Contemporary Art is here in Tucson located downtown, this museum collects diverse art anywhere from videos, paintings, videos, pictures, sculptures and artifacts from the desert, all started in the 1970s. An example is a quote of when I saw one of my managers during the event and him saying how The Monica attracts people for big events, Dustin my manager says: “It's pretty hectic today but it's just a bunch of freeloaders because of the Yelp event.” For future purposes the way I was able to describe these places and find the meaning for them is something that can help improve my writing. Like reflecting back to how the place had an impact for me, which I can relate to how my writing can impact the reader.

Developing a sense of belonging (and examine [dis]belonging), to build purpose in our writing lives

In this discussion I had to choose an article that was based on Borderlands Organizations identifying the purpose of the organization. In this discussion it was trying to understand the artifacts that were found by those who were traveling to get across the border, which then became disbelonging. Reflecting back how identified ways justice was recognized was how the Undocumented Migration Project is a clandestine movement between Latin America and the US using forensic science and anthropology understanding the violent social process being able to raise awareness with the use of research, education, and the through public eye. For example the use of logos UMP + Colibrí received over 3,900 missing people reports, identified 242 people who passed away. As well as being able to conduct community outreach and exhibitions over 100 cities globally. For my future writing this discussion can help expand my writing internationally and find different viewpoints. It’s a way of expanding my audience and finding new topics and focuses or even relating back to the organization for another writing class. Another thing is being able to reach readers who find interest in the borderlands and who want to know more and learn about the history of the struggles.
