The flora, with vegetation such as potatoes, corn, yucca, goose, arracacha, grains Andean (quinoa, kiwicha, cañihua), chili peppers, tomatoes, among others, in short it is abundant. There are many reserves and teams or campaigns that try to protect and continue helping to develop Peruvian biodiversity, but there are people who do not take this importance and simply end up destroying all our biodiversity, so that this does not happen and we can be a country rich in biodiversity, there are We must continue taking care of the environment and these areas and animals.

Peru is the point of origin and diversification of species, as well as cultivated varieties of global importance and their wild relatives. Over 65% of agriculture depends on native genetic resources, which are critical for food security. A total of 2.2 million rural families live off family agriculture. We have thousands of varieties and types of native crops. Knowledge and technology related to agro-biodiversity crops. Wild ecosystems, forests, natural pastures, Peru’s sea. Renewable natural resources, environmental services and components of biodiversity contribute to +20% of the national GDP. Most of the poorest rural population depends on the health and productivity of ecosystems for their food and daily budget. Biodiversity is key to reducing vulnerability to climate change and to developing new products.

Peru's diverse landscapes, from the Andes to the Amazon, foster extraordinary biodiversity. It's a global biodiversity hotspot, with around 71,000 known plant species, ranking among the top ten countries for plant diversity. The country is home to unique species such as jaguars and vibrant macaws. Conservation efforts, including protected areas, are prominent, but challenges like habitat loss (1.5 million hectares of forest between 2001 and 2019) and illegal wildlife trade persist. Peru actively addresses these challenges, striving to protect its vital biodiversity for the country and the world.

Peru is located in the western part of South America, covering more than 1.2 million square kilometers, and is composed of three regions: Coast, Highlands and Jungle. Its current population exceeds 31.5 million inhabitants. According to the Ministry of Environment, Peru is part of the ten most diverse countries in the world and has the second largest planet Amazon forest – which combined make up 70% of the planet’s total biodiversity. The country holds more than 20,375 species of flora, 523 mammals (5th in the world), 1847 birds (3rd in the world), 624 amphibians (4th in the world), and 2145 species of fish (1st in the world), 4000 species of butterflies (1st in the world), and more than 4500 species of potato.

Over the past decade, Peru has been one of the region’s fastest-growing economies, with an average growth rate 6% in a context of low inflation (averaging 2.9%), with Peru’s Gini coefficient improving from 55.1 to 41.5, one of the best in Latin America, according to the World Bank. A favorable external environment, prudent macroeconomic policies and structural reforms in different areas created a scenario of high growth and low inflation, also with poverty rates falling by two thirds in the past 15 years.

Despite these positive trends, there are several cross-cutting and inter-related challenges for future sustainable economic growth and development of Peru. Inequality, regional disparity, and informality remains high, and post COVID-19 economic recovery a challenge for coming years. These challenges involve the complex issues of fragility, resilience, environmental impact on biodiversity and ecosystem services.

Peru joined the global partnership of BIOFIN Phase I in 2013. The Ministry of Environment took a leading role in the BIOFIN process analysis and definition of financing mechanisms for the conservation of biodiversity and maintenance of ecosystem services within a framework of sustainable development, both in relation to the country's objectives and its international commitments. Under the project, the National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan is being updated and the financial needs for its implementation until 2030 estimated.

Peru is renowned for its extraordinary biodiversity, being one of the world's megadiverse countries. Its unique geography, spanning from the Andes Mountains to the Amazon Rainforest and the Pacific coast, contributes to a wide array of ecosystems and species. Here are some key points about biodiversity in Peru:

Diverse Ecosystems:

Amazon Rainforest: The Peruvian Amazon covers a significant portion of the country, housing an incredibly diverse range of flora and fauna. It's home to numerous species of monkeys, birds, reptiles, amphibians, insects, and a vast array of plant species.

Andes Mountains: Peru's Andean region is known for its high-altitude biodiversity. The Andes contain various habitats that host unique species adapted to the extreme conditions found at different altitudes.

Coastal Regions: The Pacific coast of Peru also boasts unique ecosystems, including coastal deserts, wetlands, and marine environments. The Humboldt Current along the coast supports diverse marine life.

Flora and Fauna:

Animal Diversity: Peru is home to an incredibly diverse range of animals, including jaguars, spectacled bears, tapirs, macaws, Andean condors, and a vast variety of monkeys and reptiles.

Plant Diversity: The country hosts a wide variety of plant species, including many endemic species found only in specific regions of Peru. The diversity of flora includes numerous orchid species, cacti, and other unique plant life.

Conservation Efforts:

Protected Areas: Peru has established a network of national parks and reserves to protect its diverse ecosystems and wildlife. This includes iconic places like Manu National Park, Tambopata National Reserve, and Huascarán National Park.

Indigenous Reserves: Indigenous communities play a significant role in conservation efforts, as they often have ancestral knowledge and sustainable practices that aid in preserving biodiversity.

Challenges: Despite conservation efforts, Peru faces challenges such as deforestation, illegal wildlife trade, mining, and climate change, impacting the country's rich biodiversity.

Biodiversity Hotspot:

Peru is part of the Amazon rainforest, considered one of the world's biodiversity hotspots. This region is of global significance due to the high number of species found nowhere else on Earth and the critical role it plays in the planet's ecological balance.

Preserving Peru's biodiversity is vital not only for the country itself but for the global community due to the importance of its ecosystems in the larger context of Earth's environmental health.

The Peruvian government, NGOs, and local communities continue to work towards the conservation and sustainable management of this precious biodiversity.

Regenerate
