- Experiments with kerning, (spacing between letters) to make the work more interesting, deliberately break conventions, and sometimes to help communicate a message. IMAGE • Blurry, out of focus images that look like amateur photographs. Images are carefully treated to heighten ambiguity and create mystery. • Contrasts with slick professional photos of establishment glossy magazines. • Appeals to youth culture, anti-establishment, cool, relates to the kind of photos the audience takes themselves. SPACE • Uses open areas of empty (NEGATIVE SPACE) spaces to contrast with crowded, confused areas of text and image. This provides a balance giving the eyes a place to rest when looking at the designs. Linear and geometric elements are randomly placed around the design. However, these are carefully arranged in relation to the text and image to balance the composition.

Add a bit more depth as to 'why' David Carson has used the techniques etc that he has for colour, e.g. blue/ tsunami/ wave overtaking the image/ abundance of water , illusion of wave coming towards us etc

i like the way he has placed the word help he has lowered the

letter p from the rest of the word he has done this to break

straight lines and create a focal point he is well known for this

he has used that trait in this poster using this images of a wave that looks

like it came from an older style printer because you can see the lines

of ink from the printer i think this gives the image a bit more character

makes it alot more intresting.

this is for a good reason though. he has then put his lettering in a very sharp

distinctive color ie black and white so he is using positive and negative color 

to make his lettering to stand out

and create a focal point for you to focus on it makes the word a lot more interesting

he has also used s hidden message in this text he has moved the p away to create the thought that

it is by itself drowning and needs "help".

he has also dropped the p and created the word "hel" which is just the same as "hell"

he is saying that these people are going through hell without saying that.

He has also used black text to make it stand out from the rest of the poster so you focus on that and it

happens to be a very important part of the poster the date and venue.
