APPEAL TO AUTHORITY:

Appeal to Authority- by Gail Ogden
Object Description:The video clip posted here is of Leonardo DiCaprio speaking to the United Nations about global warming and climate change. Leo is a beloved and an appealing actor, much of the public have watched him mature from a young boy. He draws upon his experiences and observations during his travels around the world, to express his belief in climate change and global warming. His lobbying and usage of his celebrity endorsement is a prime example of the appeal to authority red flag. Also we must ask why is it that national or international governments are the only entities capable of solving imminent climate change catastrophes? As Canadians we can all see that the new carbon tax will fatten the pockets of the government and leave ours leaner. Leo is not a scientist and much like Bill Nye, he is not able to prove scientifically with facts, that indeed there is global warming and climate change. Karl Popper and the philosophers of science, speak of what is called the demarcation problem criterion and how do you differentiate science and pseudoscience. One simple observation, yet profound observation is that people are attracted to pseudoscience by their apparent explanatory power. The explanation of climate change for the melting ice caps, warmer winters and flooding, opens our eyes to a truth that was never seen before. Once you see it, whatever happens from then on is now explainable. Climate change explains the warmer winter but also explains the colder winters. Climate change causes less salty seas and makes for saltier seas. The explanation of climate change and that this apparent strength or theory is in fact the weakness of pseudoscience explanations. Referring back to Karl Popper and his observation that "a theory that explains everything explains nothing." My Experience/Knowledge: Celebrities like Christie Brinkley and Jon Bon Jovi along with Leonardo Di Caprio should be very cautious of their stance they are taking and the lives they are affecting. When greener energy is produced, for example wind turbines and electric cars, there is a very high use of carbon energy and gases. These celebrities are using their status and pushing their views of a subject that is highly debatable amongst scientists and pseudoscientists. I have experienced very cold climates when I was younger and also in recent years. The climate for me is relevant and balances out over time. Taking care of our environment is always a good thing and being conscientious of recycling and reforestation are morally and ethically correct. The thought of climate change and a looming catastrophe because of carbon and that government is the ONLY entity capable of solving it is not agreeable with me. My Learning: I am interested in the actual science and research that has been done or not done with regards to climate change. Would Bill Nye admit to the real facts on the melting of ice caps in the Arctic and the effects on volcanoes. Is the information that Bill Nye uses current and factual? Also with regards to green energy sources like wind turbines; what will the long term effects be on our climate? As far as the government programs that research climate change and spend our tax dollars on that research, will they ever admit that in the past 15 years actual science proves there has been no global warming or change? ***Please also watch Steven Crowder at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QwviDPo4Rh4 or at www.louderwithcrowder.com Best 20 minute video and very entertaining! Notable mention also: https://www.corbettreport.com/climate-change-is-unfaslifiable-woo-woo-pseudoscience/
