Butanol is really dangerous for humans to come in contact with at concentrations as low as 50ppm.

Distillation is a process used to separate two liquids that have different boiling points. The idea is to heat a mixture to a temperature where one liquid vaporizes while the other staying in liquid form. The vapor is passed through a cooling tube, which causes it to condense and be collected in a separate container. While not a perfect system to use with liquids that have rather similar boiling points, it is effecting for separating substances like alcohols from water.
