What is the IQ test?

A standardized assessment, the intelligence quotient test or IQ test - designed to gauge an individual's cognitive abilities: logical reasoning; problem-solving; memory and mathematical skills - generates a numerical IQ score. In this scale of measurement where 100 signifies average performance, it finds wide usage in educational employment and research contexts. However, one must note that these tests offer only limited glimpses into specific aspects of cognition; they do not provide an all-encompassing evaluation of overall intelligence: indeed, intelligence is far more complex than what can be captured by such examinations. Test performance can also be influenced by cultural bias and socioeconomic factors; therefore, interpreting IQ scores demands caution. We must recognize the limitations of these scores in capturing the entire spectrum of human cognitive capacities.

I've just always had an interest when it comes to the IQ test and just generally attempting to measure people's intelligence levels. It is relevant today as it is a measurement that dictates children's placements in schools and even whether or not you can even serve in the military. The creation of it, specifically the why's and how's are the controversial part as the test is advantageous/disadvantageous for different cultural groups which I will further explain in the following slides. One of the laws that affects this issue is as previously mentioned with the military.

This is a paper on the IQ tests of individuals and their political leanings/identity in America today. This study went through the entirety of the IQ tests, each section, the political parties averages for each, and from there drew conclusions. The key takeaways of which are that "Path analyses indicate that the associations between cognitive ability and party identity are largely but not totally accounted for by socio-economic position: individuals with higher cognitive ability tend to have better socio-economic positions, and individuals with better socio-economic positions are more likely to identify as Republican." However, This only applies to the socially liberal republicans who are bringing up the scores of the socially conservatives who have the Lowest IQ of the lot. Thus the IQ test affected both identity politics as well as the political representations in America.

This is a paper published that establishes the impact that the IQ test has had over contemporary movements such as the Eugenics movement. This movement essentially served to try and improve the genetic quality of the human population by Sterilizing people with "bad genetic qualities." This as one could imagine had an extremely blurry and immoral line that propagated every "ist" you could possible think of whether it be racist ableist you name it. Since the IQ test favored certain demographics this was used as scientific proof to back the ideas of Eugenics.
