(c. 1820–1913) Born into slavery in Maryland, Harriet Tubman escaped to freedom in the North in 1849 to become the most famous "conductor" on the Underground Railroad. Tubman risked her life to lead hundreds of family members and other slaves from the plantation system to freedom on this elaborate secret network of safe houses. A leading abolitionist before the American Civil War, Tubman also helped the Union Army during the war, working as a spy among other roles.

She was born a slave and her first job was a nursemaid. Every-time the baby would cry, she would get beaten violently. After a severe head injury (someone accidentally hit her with a medal weight) she was "diagnosed' with seizures for the rest of her life. It is thought that the visions and times in which "god communicated with her" were deprived from the head injury. She changed her name to Harriet after her mother. It was December 1850 when she led her first family out of slavery (her niece, husband, and a couple of children). Her last mission to free someone was supposed to be her sister, but once she reached her sisters location she found out her sister had died..., she ended up saving a different family.

Her visions included her talking with god, and him giving her directions. Her real name was Araminta Ross, but she changed it to Harriet ross after her first escape, then became Harriet Tubman by marriage. When her owner, Edward Brodess, tried to sell her, she wished to god that he would die and a week later he did in fact die. She had two husbands, John Tubman and Nelson Davis. She died because of her narcolepsy and intense headaches.
