In a kindergarten classroom, I feel like making connections is something the students will do a lot. I think I’ll use this guide when we are having a discussion about a book we read in class.

I would have different types of texts in my classrooms dealing with a variety of topics. I would incorporate pictures, graphs, maps, etc. These will all help students gain a deeper understanding of the topics. When I am doing a lesson on one of the topics, I can integrate the text sets that go with that topic.

What’s the Purpose?

In class, we will talk about what makes a text they read purposeful. Like Tovani, I will ask students what they read recently and why. Did they really like the topic? Was it for an assignment? Were they curious? I will tell them that there is always going to be a purpose for the reading the books we read in this class. They will be informed of the purpose every time they have a text in class.

Weekly Calendar

I love the weekly calendar used by Tovani! I think to modify this for a kindergarten classroom, I could instead meet with each student, individually, face to face. We would discuss things going on in their lives or anything they want to talk about. I could also stick with the writing. They could draw what they are feeling.

Reading a Picture

Whenever I am discussing a topic in class and there is a picture to go along with it, I plan to use it. I will ask students what they notice about the picture. When we are reading picture books, I could go through the book (without reading the words) and ask students what they think is happening. Then, we could go through the book and read the words. We could compare what they thought was happening by just looking at the picture and what the words say is happening.

When going through a written text, students will use highlighters. They can highlight words that are new to them, something they connected to in the text, or anything they felt was important. We will discuss as a whole group, or in small groups what we highlighted.

When we are reading a text or learning about something, students will get the chance to raise their hands to tell me a question they have. These questions will be answered as we keep reading/learning. Students can also ask questions at the beginning. Then, I could make sure to talk about the question and answer(s) as we read or learn.

Kindergarteners could keep a journal about different things they do in the classroom. For texts we’ve read, they can jot down a few thoughts/questions or draw a picture. They can make a science journal for different experiments we do. They can jot down words that remind of the topic we are learning. Math problems or tips can be added to a journal.
