The US government put into effect Operation Garden Plot. A plan that was developed to combat major civil disorders. 10,000 federal troops were quickly moved to various locations in Washington DC. There were about 4,000 paratroopers, 5,100 officers of the DC Metropolitan Police, 2,000 members of the DC National Guard. Paratroopers and Marines deployed via helicopter to the Washington Monument.

Protesters new goal was to stop the government and prevent troops from being sent to Vietnam. The streets were covered in chaos between the troops guarding the perimeters of parks and streets, and the protesters causing disruptions with roadblocks and harassment within the city.

By 8 am, 7,000 protesters had been arrested. The city's prisons were lacking capacity which led to a detention center being set up next to RFK Stadium.

Richard Holloran, “7,000 Arrested in Capital War Protest; 150 Acre Hurt as Clashes Disrupt Traffic,” The New York Times (New York, NY), May 4, 1971.

12,000 demonstrators were arrested as a result of the Mayday Protests. Out of the total arrested, only 79 were actually convicted. Civil rights violations made by government actions were brought to light and residents felt sympathetic towards protesters due to the inhumane conditions within the prisons. The protests damaged Nixon's career and made the process of getting US troops out of Vietnam faster.
"Washington, DC protests against the war in Vietnam (Mayday), 1971," Global Nonviolent Action Database, December 8, 2011.
