Is Velsey for or against gentrification?

Velsey is against gentrification due to the fact that she believes that gentrification only contributes to help richer, whiter people. Many people who are in these neighborhoods tend to leave, given the rent raises and problems that arise in property change.

Within Velsey's article, she begins by describing what gentrification means to others. She shows that there is good to gentrification, which is shown in John Buntin's article where he begins to describe that gentrification is a good thing for minorities, meanwhile displacement doesn't exist. By giving this counter argument, she creates a sense of trust by showing that she can see both sides. Using this, she then counters Buntin's argument by saying that there are multiple studies proving his own theories incorrect.

What is the main argument in this article?

The main argument in this article is that as gentrification is happening the whites and richer are taking over the poor and cheaper areas. They take over these neighborhoods and they make them less affordable for the people that live there so they end up leaving their home to a much cheaper area.

Velsey includes very interesting data to her article for example she mentions how in some areas the black population is decreasing while the white population is increasing. Also one thing that is increasing is the cost of rent. The rent cost rising creates issues for low income people and that drives them away from what they used to call home. All of this is part of gentrification.

As reading the passage Velsey inform us that with gentrification occurring in New York, people are either thrown out of their neighborhood or they decide to leave. Although gentrification came with its benefit, like lowering crime rates and bettering school, it still does no good to the residents that have are forced to leave. Over-time the neighborhoods that are gentrified tend to become whiter and richer.
