This is having someone help you die, whether its a physician or family member or group, someone is helping or allowing you to end your life even though there are measures around that would allow you to keep breathing and your heart beating. It is a very polarized issue. There is the concern on how this could spill over legally on helping people die. The idea that someone could kill someone who might no have been ready. The value of life and the possibility of future cures are things that are things to weigh in.

How much freedom does a person have over their own life?

This was the scene that sparked this conversation with my father about how hard it would be for each of us to bury the other. He argued it would be harder for him since he's old and I'm his child. We talked about if one of us was brain dead what we both wanted. My Dad said he wanted that and he'd want to have the plug pulled if he was brain dead and nothing magical had pulled him out of some vegetative state after a month. I asked for the same and told him he should get it in legal writing.

My mom said she'd want the same. She did say she'd want to keep trying to get well even if prospects were small.

If I was in a coma and a vegetable yes I'd want someone to pull the plug. I wouldn't want to be a burden on the people around me. I'm not quite sure how I feel if I was declared terminally ill. I might try even if prospects were low and it was quite painful for all the time left. That's a bridge I'd have to cross if I ever came to it.

It was surprising to see how long it could take someone to die from overdosing on pills for that Compassionate Care group. 12-24 hours, that's a long time.

This is a topic everyone should think about, for themselves and their loved ones. It is something everyone will have to deal with at some time, passing on.
