6 Historians still argue about why Britain became such a powerhouse of the Industrial Revolution, while other European countries were slower to modernise. The Netherlands and France were two other countries that might have had an Industrial Revolution first. Conduct some Internet research to identify some of the reasons why this didn’t happen.

There are some reasons that contribute to the fact that Britain was the first country to modernize. First of all, Britain had huge deposits of coal. Many of the machines created could be powered by coal. Other than that, Britain had a jagged coastline, which helped made sea transportation a lot easier. Secondly, Britain, at the time, was an empire, therefore the power and land that it controlled overseas helped it obtained foreign goods. Lastly, Britain had no ongoing wars and was in prime condition to prosper and grow. Also, Britain had a very unregulated and free economic system, which allowed innovations to take place.

Write a paragraph explaining how life changed for British people between the mid 1700s and the late 1800s.

Life for British people changed drastically between the mid 1700s and the late 1800s. The population increase by a large margin, and has increased by more than 5 times in 1900 (7 million in 1750, and 37 million in 1900). The introduction and development of many new technologies lead to an increase in the living standard and declined the death rates of the people. Cities are Industries are being built and growing, making Britain stronger and wealthier than it has ever been.

Using Source 5.4, describe the changes that took place in Britain from 1700 to 1840.

Many changes took place in Britain from 1700 and 1840. The most noticeable difference being the population increase. As mentioned, this was due to the increased living standards and general wealth of the people. Not only that, the Industrial Revolution saw the birth of a new social class in British society - the middle class. This class had came from a range of backgrounds, but were neither aristocrats nor poor workers - as the name says, they're in between. They can afford fine clothing, furniture, ceramics, and household items. Their power increased throughout the 1800s. Last but not least, the most crucial change that ook place in Britain for 1700 to 1840 was the technology and new tools being created. These include factories and textile mills, new sources of power, and improved transport and communications. These improvements in technology are the main driving factor in pushing Britain's wealth and standard of living.

5 Before the Industrial Revolution, 80 per cent of people lived and worked on the land. How had this trend changed by 1850?

Compared to the 80% of the people who lived and worked on the land, this trend has drastically changed by 1850. Before 1750, 87% of British people lived and worked on small farms and rural areas. However, by 1900, more than 80% of British people were living in major cities/ town, while only 20% remained to live on land. People have migrated to major cities, as along with industrialization, many new jobs for new industries (hence the name) are born.

When and where did the Industrial Revolution begin?

The Industrial Revolution began in Britain. The Industrial Revolution began in approximately the 18th century, more specifically in 1760.

List five key features of British society in the century before the Industrial Revolution began.

- Britain was agricultural society - around 87% of the people lived and worked in small farms in rural areas.
- Britain was divided in strict social classes. The aristocratic families, though only making up 1% of the population, is responsible for 15% of the nation's wealth.
- Towns and villages were self contained and humble in size. Roads linking villages were poor, and most people traveled on foot and horses.
- Britain had a very poor road system, which hadn't been refined and improved a lot since the fall of the Roman Empire. As a result, people rarely traveled from their work locations and mostly stayed in their villages.
- British people's diet were mostly inadequate and the average life expectancy was short. Illnesses were common because of a poor sewage system, poor hygiene and contaminated water supplies.
