a. SCIENCE

For me, science is our way of making sense of the world and everything in it. It’s about being curious, asking questions, and finding answers through observations and experiments. Science explains how things work like why the sky is blue or how plants grow and it’s at the heart of human progress. It’s all about discovery and learning, helping us understand life and the universe better.

b. TECHNOLOGY

Technology is when we take what we’ve learned from science and use it to create tools or inventions that make our lives easier or solve problems. It’s like turning ideas into something we can use every day. It can be as simple as a wheel or as advanced as smartphones and artificial intelligence.

c. SOCIETY

Society is basically people living together, sharing experiences, traditions, and goals. It’s like a big group where everyone plays a role in building and improving the community. Society shapes how we live, what we value, and even what we aim to achieve as a group.

RELATIONSHIP OF SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY AND SOCIETY

In my own understanding, science, technology, and society are pieces of a puzzle that fit together perfectly. Science helps us understand the world and everything in it. Technology takes that knowledge and turns it into tools or solutions that make life better. And society? Well, society is the one that benefits from all of it and that's us, using these advancements to solve problems and make things easier. At the same time, society influences what scientists and inventors focus on, based on what people need or want. They all depend on each other, helping us grow and move forward together.

Why do you think the society readily accepts the benefits of science and technology even though negative results also come out from them?

- I believe that people tend to accept the benefits of science and technology because they make life easier and more convenient. It’s hard not to notice how things like phones, social media, or new medicines help us in so many ways. These are things we use every day, and they improve our lives in a way that’s easy to see. However, while we know there are some downsides like how some jobs are replaced by machines or how certain technologies can cause other issues, people often think those problems will be solved later. It’s easier to focus on the immediate benefits because they’re right in front of us, and many believe that technology will eventually find solutions for any problems it creates. We tend to trust that progress will keep moving forward and fix whatever issues arise, so the good things are often more noticeable to us than the bad.

How is science and technology affecting the growth of a nation?

- For me, science and technology are key to a nation’s growth. But it’s not just about having new gadgets or inventions. The real value is how we use them to make life better. Take education, for example. Technology in education has made learning easier for us. With just a click, we can access all sorts of information and learn in a way that wasn’t possible before. In healthcare, new treatments are helping doctors save lives. In business, technology is creating jobs and helping companies grow. But, for science and technology to really help a nation grow, we need to use them the right way. If used properly, they can improve the economy, solve problems, and make life easier for everyone. However, if we use them wrong, they can cause harm, like losing jobs. So, we have to ask ourselves, are we using science and technology for good? If we do, it can really affects our nation grow and succeed.

As students of STS, how can you be guardians of society? Cite a concrete example.

- As STS students, I think it's our responsibility to make sure both science and technology are used in ways that benefit everyone. Science and technology have huge potential to improve our lives, but we need to use them wisely and teach others how to do the same. For example, since many people are really active on social media, every time I come across posts that share knowledge or tips about pollution, climate change, or other important issues, I make sure to share them as well. Social media is such a powerful tool, and I believe that by sharing these posts, I can be a part of creating awareness about the issues that matter. It’s amazing how something as simple as clicking “share” can help inform others and get them thinking about how they can contribute to making the world a better place. Of course, we should always remember the quote, 'Think before you click.' It's important to know whether what we're sharing is a fact or not, because it can have a huge impact. This is where technology plays a big role. When it comes to technology, I also try to make sure others are using it responsibly. For example, I noticed that some people, especially those who didn’t grow up with technology, often struggle with understanding how social media works or how easily misinformation can spread. Since I've grown up with this generation who uses technology, I tried to help them understand how to use it safely and effectively. I remember helping a teacher figure out how to set up an online classroom during the pandemic, because they weren't used to it. It's not just about teaching the basics, but also making sure people understand the risks, like cyberbullying or privacy issues, which are important to address. In the end, both science and technology are tools that can either help or harm society. It’s our job to guide others by sharing knowledge, whether it’s about environmental sustainability or using technology in a positive way. Again, as STS students, we have the opportunity to lead by example, making sure that the knowledge we’ve gained doesn’t just stay with us but is passed on to those around us.

Among the presidents of the Philippines, who do you think gave the biggest importance to science & technology during their term? Explain.

-For me, Gloria Macapagal Arroyo was one of the Philippine presidents who really saw the value of science and technology in developing the country. With her background in economics and coming from a political family, she had a strategic way of leading, but what stood out to me the most was how she made science and technology a priority during her term. She didn’t just see it as an extra effort, she made sure that it was used to improve different sectors, including education, research, and industries that directly affect Filipinos.

One of the things I appreciate about her leadership is how she expanded the Philippine Science High School (PSHS) System. This was a big deal because it gave more students the chance to receive quality science education especially those who were gifted in math and science. More campuses were built across the country, which meant more opportunities for young Filipinos to excel in these fields. Another important contribution was the Philippine Technology Transfer Act of 2009 (RA 10055). This law helped make sure that the research and innovations developed in the country could actually be used in industries and businesses. Before this, a lot of government-funded research didn’t reach the people who could benefit from it. This law bridged that gap, making scientific discoveries more accessible and useful in real life. She also introduced National Innovation Strategy "Filipinnovation," which was her way of encouraging a culture of innovation in the Philippines. This strategy pushed for more collaboration between schools, businesses, and government agencies to improve research and technology. It was all about making the country more competitive in the global market and ensuring that Filipinos had the tools to create and innovate.

To me, what makes Arroyo’s legacy in science and technology so significant is that she saw innovation as a long-term investment. Her policies weren’t just short-term solutions, they were meant to build a foundation for future generations. Because of her, science and technology became a priority, and many of the programs she started are still shaping the country today.

SOURCES

If you will be an author of a certain LAW that supports science & technology, how would you name it and what will it contain?

-If I were to create a law supporting science and technology, I’d name it “The Tech for All Act” The goal of this law is to make sure that everyone, not just those who grew up with technology, has access to it. A lot of people, especially in rural areas or those who didn’t have gadgets growing up, don’t have the same opportunities to learn how to use technology. This law would make sure that technology is accessible to all, regardless of background or where they’re from.

It would also include programs to teach digital literacy to people of all ages. From students to adults, everyone should have the chance to learn how to use gadgets and the internet effectively. There would be training programs set up by schools, local governments, and community centers to help people catch up on basic tech skills and learn how technology can improve their daily lives. On top of that, the law would focus on using technology to solve real world issues like healthcare, education, and sustainability. It would fund projects and startups that are creating practical, life changing solutions to improve communities. Lastly, it would include strong regulations to ensure that technology is used responsibly, with privacy and ethics at the forefront. This law would make sure that as we move forward into an increasingly digital world, no one gets left behind, and everyone has the tools to succeed.

The goal of the “Tech for All Act” would be to ensure technology is a force for good, that it benefits every person in the country, and that it helps us tackle the challenges of tomorrow, TOGETHER.

• What constitute a good life for you?

A good life, for me, is a life that feels fulfilling and full of purpose. It’s about finding joy in the small things like laughing with my friends or spending time with my family. A good life is also about growth, learning from my mistakes, and striving to be a better version of myself every day. It’s not about having everything perfect, but feeling content with where I am and being surrounded by people who support and loves me. I think the key to a good life is finding balance between chasing dreams and appreciating what you already have.

• To what extent do scientific advancements impact your idea of good life?

Science and technology definitely make life easier. I remember during the pandemic when everything shifted to online classes and virtual meetups, it felt like technology was the only thing keeping us connected. It helped me keep up with school and stay in touch with my friends and my family. But, honestly, sometimes I feel like technology can also be overwhelming. I think a good life is about knowing when to put the phone down and enjoy the real world. It’s all about balance using technology to help us, but not letting it take over.

• How can you achieve good life?

I believe, achieving a good life means staying true to myself and living in a way that honors God. It’s about being kind to others, working hard, and focusing on what really matters like love, family, and personal growth. A good life isn’t about perfection, but about being grateful for every moment and trusting that everything happens for a reason. I believe that with God’s guidance, I can overcome challenges and continue to grow into the person I’m meant to be. At the end of the day, a good life is one that’s full of purpose, faith, and the love I share with others.

We are now in the 21st century, where technology is everything. If we are given a chance to create an intelligent machine, we are going to instill certain morals in our creation. Our machine must be USER FRIENDLY, has ETHICAL AWARENESS, and its SYSTEM must be RELIABLE.

Our intelligent machine must be user friendly and should value the privacy and the safety of its clients. Data protection and safe usage is our top priority in creating a machine, and no one should feel worried about entrusting their personal data to an intelligent machine. Ethical awareness is also important and our intelligent machine must contain this kind of knowledge. Our creation must have empathetic responsibility that will help them to understand, recognize, and respond to human emotions. Through this, our machine would be able to provide emotional support for our clients. And lastly, our machine must have a reliable system, where fake news and misinformation are being filtered, so the users will only consume evidence-based media and facts. Our machine will be equipped with morals that foster honesty, fairness, and justice. These three are important in order for our creation to be reliable and objective.

In conclusion, we believe that intelligent machines should not just contain general knowledge and convenient features. It must also prioritize the well-being of its users, from the safety of their data to providing emotional support. Intelligent machines must also be reliable at all times. It must not tolerate hatred and negativity, but rather help build a society where fairness and justice are being fostered.
