The problem we have chosen is deforestation which links into the planetary boundary of Land System Change.
The problem is land use change through deforestation. Deforestation is the permanent removal of trees and forests in order to make room for something else, usually agricultural farming/ grazing, urban use, etc. Deforestation drastically changes the biodiversity of the ecosystem, therefore linking into and is land system change.

Causation of deforestation

The causes of Deforestation can be from a number of different factors that are neither direct nor indirect causes. The single most direct cause of deforestation comes from the need for conversion of cropland and agricultural needs. Within deforestation there is never a link to one direct cause for deforestation which is evident in the large masses of different deforestation causes (direct or indirect) sometimes the cause for deforestation cannot be controlled by man by becoming something that nature chooses itself.

Direct causes of deforestation are:

- Natural causes such as hurricanes, fires, floods and parasitic that eat away at forests

- Human causes which include the expansion of agricultural lands and cattle grounds, timber milling, creating space for mining corporations, infrastructure and housing development

The indirect causes:

- stem from government and political actions, corruption and wrong public administration investments

- socioeconomic causes with the increase in population growth, climate change and growth of military

The harvesting of palm oil is a major contributor to deforestation worldwide. Found in nearly 50% of food and household products sold in our local supermarkets, Palm oil is used frequently by companies due to its long shelf life. However, the farming of palm oil is resulting in some of the worlds most diverse ecosystems, and habitats, being destroyed. In fact, in the past 10 years alone, the already endangered orangutan population has decreased by 50 percent as the result of habitat loss caused by deforestation.
Sources (One Green Planet, WWF)

Another culprit of our current deforestation crisis is the paper industry, initiated by the industrial revolution, with increasing demand making this a problem that worsens by the day. The Union of Concerned Scientists found that “wood products,” including paper, account for about 10% of total deforestation.
(Source: Aiche.org)

Release of CO2) More than 1.5 billion tons of carbon dioxide are released to the atmosphere due to deforestation. The release of this greenhouse gas subsequently increases global warming, which leads to other issues such as rising sea levels etc.
Drought) When trees are cut down in a forest, it eliminates or decreases the amount of transpiration. This will result in a decrease in the amount of rainfall in the area.
Soil degradation) Without forests, the soil erodes and washes away. Trees help retain water and topsoil (rich nutrients), by acting as a natural barrier to slow water running off the land.
Distinction of species) Forests contain the highest amount of terrestrial biodiversity. Therefore, deforestation causes a massive decrease in biodiversity, because the natural habitats are destructed.

2E - SOLUTIONS

Deforestation solutions are crucial in the success of the future of the planet. The prevention and restoration of the effects of deforestation feel foreign and out of the average persons reach however, it is the best chance humans have to combat the irreversible effects of climate change during this epoch of ‘climate emergency’. (Greenpeace, 2020) There aren’t total and definite solutions, there are on the contrary approaches and acts that have previously worked sufficiently.

Promotion of sustainable choices is an approach in creating mass difference in the battle to save the forests. The extinction of ‘single-use plastics’, choosing sustainable food at supermarkets and choosing recyclable and responsibly source packaging all promote a cleaner consumerism. The avoidance of traditional consumer capitalisation places money in better sources and ethical production companies. This reflects the consumers wants and needs, all whilst demoting and theocratically defunding money-hungry companies involved in deforestation.

‘Corporations have the ability to destroy the world’s forest, they also have the ability to save them’. (Greenpeace, 2020) The exploration, confrontation and examination of corporations whom do actively practice unethical and environmental savagery fear foot-trafficked movements, blatantly presenting confrontational images and facts to other average consumers. The longevity of this approach is vast and able to change a whole companies practice or risk entire detonation. This has previously worked, with many food-based companies/corporations reevaluating their production process e.g. the creation of sustainable companies like Greenpalm, reducing unjustified and illegal palm oil production.

Approaches and actions are able to change and rearrange corporations entire production. Consumers hold the power within the future of this planet and the extinctions of forests. By buying ethically, sustainably and making informed purchases, a consumer potentially could prevent irreversible effects of deforestation.
