In this lesson, first grade students are being introduced to typing using the platform BBC Dance Mat Typing program. They are in the process of understanding the correct finger placement on the keyboard’s home row (A, S, D, F,G,H J, K, L), while also practicing typing letters through an interactive game with animals who give directions. Students will follow the given directions from the animated animals by using the correct finger placement, having accuracy, and practicing good habits by keeping hands on the home row, rather than individually pressing letters.

Typing is something that helps us write stories, essays, and even talk to friends and families. Instead of using a writing tool such as a pencil, we use our fingers on a keyboard. Just like in writing, we need to start with a how-to process. In typing we need to start with the right finger placement.”

T: Ask the students and call on a few, “Has anyone used a keyboard before? Or typed on a computer to play games?”

T: Show a large keyboard (projector/smartboard if available).
