The U.S. tried to stay neutral, but when German U-boats sank the Lusitania, they supported Britain more. What made the U.S. join WWI and not like Germany was the Zimmerman telegram that they tried to send to Mexico to attack us. They got involved in WWII because Japan bombed us at Pearl Harbor since we stopped giving them oil. December 7, 1941 is when the U.S. finally joined WWII.

America's involvement in WWII had a good impact on the economy and the workforce of the U.S. American factories were revised to produce goods to support the war effort. Almost overnight the unemployment rate dropped to around 10%. The U.S. spent around $350 billion during WWII. About 40% of that came from taxes, and the rest came from borrowing.

FDR built powerful wartime coalition with Britain and the Soviet Union, and led the nation to victory against Nazi Germany. His wartime efforts prepared the path of success for Harry Truman to win against Japan. He was elected to the presidency four times, serving from March 1933 until his death in office April 1945. FDR made sure we had stayed neutral until Japan had attacked. We supported the British throughout it all and the Allies too.
