Some evidence of this statement is that his parents abuse him. Because of this, Johnny has never experienced real love in his family before. Some of the evidence of this is when Johnny asks, “My parents, did they ask about me?”  Dally responded no to that question. This shows that Johnny cares what his parents think of him. Another reason why Johnny’s motivation is that he wants to love is that when Johnny stabbed Bob, he did it because he couldn’t afford to lose another friend of his. His friends play the role of his family, and they are very important to Johnny.

He tends to put the needs of others before his own, and is also very agreeable. This can be supported by when he ran into the burning building to save the children. He is agreeable meaning that he can relate to the ideas of others and can connect with people on a whole new level about emotional topics. Johnny also values harmony and doesn’t tend to initiate fights.He said, “It seems like there's gotta be someplace without greasers or Socs, with just people. Plain, ordinary people” (83). Ponyboy even said that Johnny listened to all of his problems, but never complained to Ponyboy about his own. Instead, he helps solve the problem.

Because of this trait,  he doesn’t think fondly of himself because he thinks something is wrong with him. This can be supported by the negative words he has said about himself to Ponyboy.  Johnny has a high level of neuroticism, meaning he does not have high self-esteem. For example, Johnny stated, “At least you got Soda, I ain’t got nobody” (33). His parents abuse him so he has no one at home to care for him.

A mediator is a person who is always trying to find the best in people and events, figuring out how they can make the situation better. Johnny always seems to try and find the good in the Socs like Cherry and Marcia. They were Socs, but he stood up for them at the movies. And he befriended Dally, who had a horrible family history and did terrible things. Johnny had brought out the good in Dally because he was patient with him. Johnny is also a very introverted person. He is very shy and quiet. His personality type clearly explains this. People who are extroverted tend to be more social and outgoing while, Johnny, who is very introverted (the opposite of extroverted) does not like social situations. This can be supported by the way he acts around people. He’s shy like Ponyboy described him. He normally stays quiet when other people are getting picked on. Not because he wants to, but because he feels as if he physically can’t. Some evidence for this statement is when Ponyboy said, “When you picture a dark puppy that has been kicked too many times and lost in a crowd of strangers, you have Johnny” (11) What he said was a metaphor. Puppies are timid fragile creatures and if you hurt them they become even timider. Imagine that. That metaphorically is Johnny.

He is very deep and developed. For example, he’s reserved and calm but very impulsive. He also can be very brave when the situation calls for it. Evidence for this statement would be that when Dally wouldn’t leave Cherry alone at the movies, he stood up for her. He said, “Leave her alone Dally” (22). Dally listened to Johnny and walked away. Johnny also has no interest in having power over others and, as said before thinks of himself very negatively. His parents are abusive and don’t care about him so he feels like there is something wrong with him. Also, Johnny is very agreeable so he tends to put the needs of others before his own. Like the time he ran into a burning building to save the children inside of it. He died. Johnny also craves the depth of mutual understanding, but he tires easily in social situations. He is a very introverted person. Also, he is low on openness to experience and thinks of things in different, more abstract ways. Ponyboy even said he could find a lot of meaning in small things.
