17According to her, the king was chosen by god, she believed this because it is what is said on their school books and teachers.

18Her family don’t favor the shah due to what the shahs father did to their family. Their grandfather was the prince but was overthrown by the shahs father and was taken advantage of and took everything they own

19His job was to be the prince yet when Reza overthrew him he became the prime minister, and he became a communist leader, with later on getting mentally ill.

20God came back after she realized that she was lied to by everyone at school and wanted to feel his presence.

21The shah was even more strict than his father.

22The photo represents how the shah pretended that the countries rule would be safe to their first leader, after overthrowing their old government.23Her father is a photographer and is a very dangerous job, due to the shah executing any he finds.

believed that a king was chosen by God. She reasoned this based on her teacherâs lessons and her religious faith.

18. Her parents reacted strongly because her family had suffered under the Shahs rule. They knew the monarchy was not divinely chosen but imposed through power and oppression.

19. Marjis grandfather was originally a prince but later became Prime Minister under Reza Shah. As he adopted communist ideals, he opposed the regime, leading to his imprisonment and torture.

20. God returns to comfort Marjis after she learns about her grandfathers suffering and begins questioning her faith.

Chapter 4:

21. The new Shah, Mohammad Reza, was just as oppressive as his father, continuing policies of imprisonment and torture against dissenters.

22. The image symbolizes the pain and suffering of political prisoners, particularly Marjis grandfather, as he was tortured in water-filled cells.

23. Marjis father takes photographs of the protests, which is dangerous because documenting demonstrations is forbidden and could lead to imprisonment.
