Golding uses Characterization to make the passage dramatic and tense. The evidences are " Throwing stones ", " One hand still on the lever ", " Ralph was a shock of hair " and " Piggy a bag of fat ". Roger has changed from a civilized, innocent kid who used to not have the courage to harm others, however as the story progresses, he has became more violent and became more courageous especially when he joined Jack's reign which allowed him to unleash his innate cruelty where he couldn't act carelessly in the mordern world where there are rules to abide to. His word choice and actions became more harsh and inappropriate which causes harm physically and mentally to the other boys. Golding has clearly depicted the difference between the period when Roger had first step foot on the island and when he had join Jack's tribe. Hence, Golding is able to use characterization to create the story more dramatic as the words and action as shown by Roger shows the intense atmosphere between all of the boys and it hows how savage and how the manners of a British civilized boy has completely changed.

Golding uses words and symbol. The evidence is "fragile, shining beauty of the shell" and "white, magic shell" This shows the recurrent symbol of the conch which reminds them of the rules they had set up at the beginning. Though, the conch starts to lose its power [fragile] as majority of the boys, now, disregarded it. Thus, it becomes an empty promise as the boys change and lose their sense of logic as well as their civilized ways. By this, the power of the conch is exaggerated as, once, the boys saw it as a source of empowerment. This creates a dramatic effect throughout the passage as the boys remembered being controlled by the conch which Piggy held up high. The boys do not see the conch as a symbol of civilization instead a symbol of restraint. Thus, making the situation tense as they battle of which is better; civilization or savagery.

The death of Piggy portrays a dramatic moment in the novel. "Jolt in the earth...monstrous red thing bounded across the neck" The moment when Roger uses rocks to attempt to hit Ralph and Piggy, it shows that Jack's tribe disregards Ralph's civilization, furthermore, unlike Simon, nothing predicted Piggy's death beforehand. The description of the projectiles going past Ralph and Piggy made Jack's purpose to only threaten Ralph and Piggy. However, the use of weapons against each other showed that the only outcome is violence, and clearly shown through Piggy's death. Piggy's death also marks the loss of intelligence and the voice of reason among the boys. These sudden changes with Piggy's death and outcomes as the climax creates a dramatic scene

Golding uses words and symbols to portray such a dramatic and tense moment in the novel. The evidence is, "White magic shell," and ,"fragile shining beauty of the shell,". The adjectives used to describe the shell shows the effect that it had on the situation. This enhances the dramatisation as the shell has been bestowed with such a high value by the boys, going as far as thinking that it possesses magic even though its just a normal shell capable of producing a distinct sound that Ralph found. Therefore, this shows the repeating trend that the shell possesses the power to make the boys follow orders and influence them to follow the rules that was set up in the beginning. The second evidence shows how powerful and majestic the shell is while showing how easily it can lose whatever left of its value. The word 'fragile' meant that most of the boys have already disregarded the rules that was enforced by the shell and the humanity within them because they have already forgotten their civilised ways when they turned savage. Hence, Golding's usage of words and symbols encapsulate the dramatisation and tension that was built up in that particular moment due to the way the shell was described. The shell's power determined whether Jack's tribe will completely turn savage or return to Ralph's side. The shell's power meant the survival of the group of boys in the island. The shell's power meant their safety. And losing the shell's power meant relinquishing their only chance of staying together as a group and the only chance of returning to the 'adult's world'. Hence, Golding was able to create an extremely tense and dramatic atmosphere as the conch is deciding factor between the battle of civilisation and savagery which ultimately led to Piggy's death and the loss of the remnants of humanity within Jack's tribe.

Golding uses sound to create a tense atmosphere. The evidence is " Steady booing" and "silent and pause", This shows that they do not respect Piggy and never gives him chance to speak. The only reason they stopped to listen is to make fun of him later on. Jack's tribe is tired of all the speeches about how fire is the key to their rescue and restrictions to stop them from having fun. Hence, there was a conflict created by the two opposites both insisting to have it their way and created a tense atmosphere.

Golding uses characterization in Roger. The evidence is 'throwing stones one hand still on the level Ralph was a shock of hair and Piggy a bag of fat.Roger is now uncivilized and is violent. Ready to attack whenever he feels like it or when he is ordered to. He stopped viewing people as human beings but as things from his view from above. He enjoys causing pain to others, therefore he was throwing stones at the rest of the boys during the meeting.

Golding uses characterization in Piggy. The evidence is " "Which is better - to be a pack of painted niggers like you are, or to be sensible like Ralph is?" " This evidence tells us that Piggy was creating a tensed and serious moment when he said that sentence to the boys. It made the passage dramatic as "a great clamor rose among the savages." These evidence tells us that it was tensed and dramatic as Piggy created a serious mood when he asked about the boys' opinions towards being civilized like Ralph or being savage like they already are, and it was dramatic as the boys were shouting our their opinions, creating quite a scene.

This is as seen in the steady booing by Jack and his tribe, silence and pause, the great clamor and all the shouting and yelling from the boys. This shows how Jack and his tribe have chosen to ignore and disregard Ralph and to increase his tribe in volume to show superiority and strong hostility towards one another just like animals.

What we covered today:
Discussion & presentation of crucial themes of the novel by...

SYUHADA:
Civilization vs Savagery: Ralph calls out to everyone using the conch shell. Assembly to set up rules to create some form of order among themselves. They also elected Ralph as the leader - shows their first step to civilization. They are following the way adults would have elected their own leader.
Human Instinct: Hunting & killing to protect and feed themselves. e.g. Jack in-charge of hunting. The instinct to survive is/was primed.

ALICIA:
Savagery: Roger kills Piggy without hesitation. The boys also killed Simon thinking it was a beast. This shows the effect of fear which took over or the primitive instinct to protect one's self. This unleashes the boys' lust for blood. Blood represents death (blood is shed when the two boys were killed) and atonement (as believed in society's subscription to many popular religions). Ironically, organised religion is also part of what we know as civilized society.

ANGELA
Savagery: The island was set on fire - this signifies their lack of self-control. It shows, also, the folly of their intent to gain more power and more control.

FADHIL:
Effect of Fear: The littleluns have nightmares about the beast coming to find them. Shows their natural, child-like tendency to be afraid of the unknown and to allow their imagination to run wild. In civilized society, these children would have had adults to comfort them and reassure them. Now, with the lack of parental guidance, the whole group of boys have crystalised and enshrined their fear to be embodied into the 'beast'.

Homework:
1) Read Chapter 12 (Pg 119-123) of Mining for Meaning on CONFLICT
2) Attempt Exercise 12A (Pg121-123), Question 2 (3 x DELs) in your Notebook.
